LOANS FOR AUSTRIA
ATTITUDE OF THE BANKS GUARANTEES REQUIRED. LONDON, May 16. (Received May 16, at 7 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent points out that foreign banks are no longer willing to make loans to Austria except with a guarantee from their own Government. The British Government naturally is reluctant to saddle itself with such liability. The earlier loans merely postponed the collapse and no assurance can be given that a fresh loan would fare differently.
