CITY POLICE COURT

Saturday, May 14. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Albert James Bell, who was described by Sub-iuspeetor Cameron as “ a hopeless case,” pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. and was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. James Linton Beck Cottle pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and also to a charge of procuring liquor while prohibited. He was fined 20s, in default three days’ imprisonment, on the first charge, and 12s 6d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, on the other. Simon Gray Dick, on a charge of drunkenness, was fined 20s. in default 24 hours' imprisonment. WIFE AND HUSBAND CHARGED. Albert Francis Cameron Dull pleaded not guilty to a charge of being found drunk in a public place, aud Sarah Duff, wife of the defendant, pleaded guilty to a charge of wilfully obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty.— Constable Elms said that Duff had been making a nuisance of himself iu Princes street, near the Stock Exchange, and witness had advised him to go home. Duff had refused to do so, and witness had arrested him. Witness was taking Duff to the taxi rank in Water street when Mis Duff, who was collecting for unemployment relief, had come up and endeavoured to hold him. His face was scratched in the encounter.—Duff denied being drunk, and stated that the constable bad not advised him to go home.—Constable Oswald gave evidence regarding Duff’s condition. —Sub-inspector Cameron said chat Duff was a relief worker. His wile haff apparently lost her head when she saw her husband arrested. —The magistrate said that the husband was tbc real offender, but the wife would havs to learn that sbe could not interfere with tiie police in any circumstances. She would be convicted and ordered to come up lor sentence if called upon within six months. Duff would be fined 20s. in default three days’ imprisonment.
