ELLIS CUP COMPETITION CITY AND PACIFIC DRAW A fast game was played between City and Pacific on the Oval on Saturday in the second round of the Ellis Cup Competition. Both sides lidded strong teams, and the game ended in a draw. There was an unfortunate incident towards the close of the game, when Williams (one of the City forwards) and Mackey (a Pacific hack) were ordered to leave the field by the referee. At th,q Stadium Christian Brothers beat Athletic bv a narrow margin. CITY v. PACIFIC City invaded Pacific’s territory from the kick-off. Crawford followed up a loose rush, and was collared just in time. Luskie was entrusted with a penalty kick from inside Pacific’s twenty-five and opened City’s score by kicking a goal. City launched another attack and Ginders scored wide out, N. Barbara failed with the kick. Pacific rallied, and a fine dribbling rush, started by Mackey, ended in Reid scoring behind the posts. Caskie converted. Half time was then called, the scores being: City 5 points. Pacific 5 points. Play was fairly even for a time after the game was resumed. Both sets of forwards were playing a hard game. Mackey was doing some good work_ for his side, making several determined thrusts which placed City on the defensive. Play was quickly transferred to tlic other end, nnr] Pacific was hard pressed when the Wiiiiams-Mackey incident occurred. Repeated onslaughts by Pacific ended in Blackwood scoring near the corner. Caskie failed with the kick. City pressed their opponents back, and after some hard play near Pacific’s line, Crawford pushed his way over. The try was not converted. Both sides showed plenty of dash towards the end, each striving hard for a winning try. The final scores were:City S points Pacific 8 points Mr L. M'Donald was referee. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS v. ATHLETIC The Stadium ground was in good order for the match between Christian Brothers and Athletic. The Greens attacked from the kick off, but a force down was the only result. D. Gray led an attack to the Green’s line, where H. Gray secured and scored between the posts. Atkinson’s kick failed. Pearce made a strong run, but was brought down by the Athletic full-back. Christian Brothers returned to the attack, and from a cross-kick by O’Malley, J. O’Connor scored under the posts. The try was converted by J. O’Connor. After the resumption of the game the Greens rushed play to the Athletics’ twenty-five, and a clever move by B. O’Connor enabled Pearce to score under the posts. B. O’Connor was successful with the kick. A series of rushes by Athletic were rewarded, after Craik had missed two penalty kicks, by Atkinson scoring in a good position. Craik failed to convert. Some bright play was seen in the closing sages, and the final scores were:— Christian Brothers .. 10 points. Athletic 0 points. Mr A. Townsend was referee. IN OTHER CENTRES AUCKLAND MATCHES.
