QUEENSTOWN NOTES

-CENTRAL OTAGG

(From Our Own QUEENSTOWN. February 23. , THE WEATHER. Glorious weather has prevailed here again this -week. Light heat showers fell on two or three occasions. Sunday’s being the heaviest registered, but they were most welcome. Yesterday and to-day have been very warm. This afternoon was about the hottest afternoon experienced here this season. The surrounding country districts report little or no rain, so that the conditions are drier than the farmers like. The readings taken at the local meteorological station for the seven days ended February 21 are:—

The acting-secretary (Mr D. F. Macdonald) reported a satisfactory credit balance. As the late secretary had prepared no statement of accounts, the chairman and acting-secretary were instructed to furnish this to the next meeting. The following office-bearers were ap- j pointed for the ensuing year:—Patrons— j Messrs A. F. Hawke, H. Mackenzie, sen., j W. A. Bodkin. M.P., R M. Paterson, and D Jardine; president. L. J. It was also resolved that ail outboard motor races be open events. As was done last year, the club will bear half the cost of the freight on rowing boats. A vote of thanks was passed to the Railways Department for concessions granted last year, and the secretary was instructed to solicit a renewal of same for the forthcoming Easter regatta. UNEMPLOYMENT. \ A public meeting was held on Thursday evening in order to consider the position of the local unemployed, who have had no relief work for over two months. His Worship the Mayor presided. He outlined what had been done in the way of making representations to the Minister of Unemployment and to the commissioner on behalf of workless men in the Queenstown district. There were about 18 or 20 in the town itself, and 38 dependents. No satisfaction., however, had been got, and the position df some of the men in particular was becoming very serious. They were actually being car-, ried along by the local tradespeople, who either had to take a humane view of their circumstances or see them starve. Already a drift to the cities had set in, as work was provided 1 there for the unemployed. The local Borough Council had put up quite a good proposition to the board in offering to provide all the material necessary for the completion of the concrete breastwork on the waterfront. as well as expert supervision, if the board would sanction the labour of unemployed men being used in the construction of it. This, however, had been turned down by the board. Some strong views were expressed by others present, aqd the following resolution was finally harried unanimously:— “That this meeting of citizens of Queenstown protests against the unfair treatment meted out to the unemployed men of this district in that no work has been made available for over two months, and we make strong representations to the Minister and member |to immediately give relief.” - , PERSONAL.
