(From Odk' Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February 24, MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the monthly’ sitting of the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., judgment for plaintiff by default was given in’the following:—J. H. Stevenson, Ltd., v. E. Little (Invercargill), claim £23 4s 4d, with court costa (£1 17s) and solicitor’s fdes (£5 14s Gd). Bilzon and Smart, butchers, claimed £2 18s 6d on a judgment summons from James Wright, railway ganger, Stirling.— After hearing the evidence of the judgment debtor, who stated that he had a wife and/five children depending on him, an order was made for payment of Is per week.

James Wright (Stirling.—Claim, £3 10s Bd, for meat purchased on \defendant’s behalf. — The plaintiff, in evidence, said that the defendant and he, together with another railway employee, had been in the habit of getting meat from Burnside freezer at the rate of one sheep a week for some time, until it became too dear, and was discontinued in August last- The station master at Lovell’s Flat also got a sheep a week, which he divided with another, and it was the station master who had ordered tile sheep from the works, although the plaintiff had made himself responsible for the payment of the sheep that he and two others, of whom the defendant was one, received. ,W. G. May, of Clydeyale, was charged with failing to pay instalment of unemployment tax due on August 1, 1931, and was fined 20s, with costs (10s). —Sergeant Armstrong prosecuted. BY-LAW BREACHES. Cecil Maker, charged with riding a motor cycle without number plates, was convicted and ordered to pay costs (ids). —John Falconer, charged with negligently riding a pueh bicycle in Clyde street, was convicted and ordered to pay costs (10s). CHARGE OF ASSAULT. A young man named Gordon Ward was charged with > assaulting Charles Goodwin Woodward by striking him with his fist, and securities to keep 'the peace were asked for on behalf of the complainant.—Counsel for defendant said the assault was a trivial one, and there was no need to have defendant bound oyer. — D. G. Radcliffe, medical practitioner, said that on the evening of December 31 plaintiff consulted him about an injury to his nose. Plaintiff was suffering from hemmorrhage of the flose, the result of a blow. He set the nose fn splints and saw complainant some days afterwards, when the injury was progressing well.—Plaintiff, a railway porter by occupation, said he was standing at the corner of Clyde and John streets on the evening in question, talking to a man, when he saw Ward and two others a little way off, but paid no attention. Ward came up and without saying anything punched witness on the nose. As a result he had to consult h doctor and was off work for five days. At this stage counsel for plaintiff said he would not press the claim for sureties to keep the peace. —Gordon Ward, in evidence,, said he had been told that Woodward had threatened to " knock his block on, and on the date in question had walked up to Woodward and said, “ Well, Chayley, here’s my block, haife ago at it. He had then punched plaintiff.—-Alexander Kennedv gave corroborative evidence.— His Worship said defendant would be competed and .ordered to come up f<Jr sentence if called upon. That-would meet the case, he thought. He would also be ordered to pay court costs 12s, doctor s fee £1 11s 6d, and solicitor’s fee £1 Is. BOWLING. CQURT '\ g ITTINGS . <\s previously intimated the sittings of the Magistrate’s Court at Kaitaimata and Clinton are now cut out, and a short sitting at Kaitangata on Thursday of this weok will be the last. The Clinton Court business will be divided between Gore and Balclutha. at the discretion of the magistrate ( (Mr H. J*. Dixon), and according to locality.
