SPRINGBOK CRICKETERS

FIFTH TEST MATCH RAIN PREVENTS PLAY (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, February 13. (Received Feb. 14, at 6.5 p.m.) Following yesterday’s play there was heavy rain whieli rendered play at the usual time doubtful to-day. About 11 o’clock this morning there was another heavy downpour, and further rain at 2.30 prevented a resumption to-day. There is a prospect of the match now lasting until Tuesday as the wicket may l>e slow and easy on Monday. If the South Africans had resumed to-day the game wouid probably have been over in an hour, as the wicket would have been a really sticky one, made for Ironmonger. As a result of the loss of Saturday’s gate the Board of Control may have to make up about £llOO, the amount short of the guarantee to the South Africans. South Africa made 38 runs in their first innings, and have one wicket down for 6 in their second. Australia’s first innings realised 153 runs. MATCHES IN NEW ZEALAND. (Per United Pbess Association i CHRISTCHURCH, February 13. The prospect of an early finish to the final test match now being played between Australia and South Africa brings the New Zealand tour of the South African team within the bounds of certainty. “ Unless something very much unforeseen happens in the way of rain,” said Mr Winsor, secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council this morning, “ the tour must eventuate.” ARRANGEMENTS FOR TOUR. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTHURCH, February 14. At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr E. R. Caygill, referring to the arrangements for the tour of the South African team, said that a short tour had to suffice, and there naturally would be disappointment that the team would not be playing in several centres, one of which was Dunedin. The arrangements made, however, promised best from the financial point of view. The executive had considered making the Christchurch match one between the South Africans and a South Island side, but it seemed that a test match in Christchurch was imperative.
