THE BRITISH TARIFF
LIST OF EXEMPTIONS (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, February 12. The list of exemptions from the general tariff of 10 per cent, imposed by the Government’s Imports Duties Bill includes (inter alia) wheat, meat, bacon, tea, raw cotton (including unmanufactured cotton waste and unbleached cotton and Enters’ cotton), seed, rape seed and linseed, flax and hemp, raw wool, newspapers’ newsprint, wood pulp, raw rubber, iron ore, tin ores, wooden pit props, sulphur, mineral phosphates of lime, unset precious stones, radium compounds and ores. Goods consigned to registered shipyards are imported free if they are to be used for building, repairing, or refitting ships. SPIRIT OF REASONABLENESS. STATEMENT BY MR CHAMBERLAIN. LONDON, February 12. (Received Feb. 13, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Neville Chamberlain, speaking at Birmingham, said that when they imposed new duties they would not allow them to operate against goods from the dominions until the matter had been fully discussed. “We are confident,” he said, “that having begun in an enthusiastic spirit we will find a response in the dominions, and we shall leave for the Ottawa Conference with a commercial treaty ensuring that everyone will buy from Britain what they do not manufacture themselves. We shall negotiate with foreign countries a few months hence regarding reciprocal commercial relations.” STATEMENT BY CANADIAN PREMIER, OTTAWA, February 12. The Government is not in a position to reveal the agenda of the Imperial Conference and may not be able to do so during the session, so the Premier, Mr Bennett, informed Mr Mackenzie King in the House of Commons. The agenda was a matter of negotiation between the Empire countries. LONDON NEWSPAPERS’ QUESTION. LONDON, February IS. (Received Feb 14, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Express and the Daily Mail ask why newsprint woodpulp and rubber are admitted free under the tariff and why the dominions are deprived of the preference which should be theirs.
