VESSEL ON A REEF

FINLAND COMPANY’S STEAMER ALL ON BOARD RESCUED. HELSINGFORS, December 30. (Received Dec. 30, at 9 p.m.) Striking a reef during a blinding snowstorm on the Finland Coast, the Finland Steamship Company’s steamer Orion became a total wreck. Terrific seas flooded the vessel, and washed away the wireless room. It was impossible to lower the boats, but the crew burned flares and attracted the attention of salvage boats, which rescued 10 of the crew and a woman passenger, leaving nine, including the captain, on board. A lifeboat crew of five put out at midnight and took off the remainder, but they were missing all day. A blizzard swept them out to sea, where they remained without food and water until they reached a light ship, which took them on board. All were exhausted, and some were injured.
