CROMWELL NOTES

CENTRAL OTAGO

(From Odr Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, September 21. With the snow lying low down on the mountains, hard froste still prevail, the days being bright and sunny. Growth in gardens and on the pastoral country is very backward, and sheepowners particularly are anxiously looking for a change to bring the feed away. The conditions, too. are directly against the interests of orchardists. , FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT.

The Vincent Rugby Sub-union’s tournament, which was postponed from September 5 on account of the weather, was held at Alexandra on Saturday. The weather was perfect, and with a large entry there was a good attendance of spectators. The playing areas were in excellent order. The management was all that could be desired, and once play commenced (shortly after 9.30 a.tn.) there was never an idle moment, the last two teams taking the field at 4.50. There was a total entry of 40 teams, but a few of these did not arrive; yet, to keep the games up to time, a second ground had to be used at intervals. With a few exceptions, perhaps, the Senior and B Grade games were nothing to enthuse over, but the bantams particularly, and also the schools and juniors, played attractive football. Outstanding in the seniors was the play of Coal Creek, the ultimate winners, who delighted the spectators with their neat open play. _ Five teams competed in the bantam section. The final was between Miller’s Flat and Alexandra, the former winning by eight points to six. The winning team was composed of W. Campbell, H. Arnott, W. Fergusson, D. Brown, R. M'Arthur, W. Mackenzie, and S. Fergusson.

There were seven teams in the School Grade, the final being contested by Miller’s Flat and Cromwell, and Miller’s Flat again prevailed by three points to nil. The members of the school team were W. Campbell, R. Brown, H. Peek, C. Campbell, L. Tamblyn, C. Orr, L. Campbell. With five entries the preliminaries in the Junior Grade left Alexandra and Roxburgh District High School in the final, the Roxburgh boys winning by six pointe to nil. The winning team was as follows:—G. Waigth, J. Hall. J. Campbell, L. Shand, A. M'Pherson, P. Dunlay, A. Craig. From an entry of 11 in the B Grade, eight competed. Kyeburn A and Alexandra A fought out a stubborn final, Kyeburn eventually winning by a penalty goal. The winning team was: A. Knight, J. M. Crutchlev, M. Griffiths, R. Wilson, G. Ward, S. Ward, G. M'Lean. Nine out of an entry of 12 teams contested the Senior Grade, and Matakanui and Coal Creek were left in the final. _ This was a stirring contest, full of excitement tor the spectators. There was no score in the first half. Early in the second half Coal Creek got a simple try when Mercer was left unmarked at the end of a long line out at the posts. This was converted. Matakanui was hard on attack when the bell went for time as Clouston took a penalty. He tap-kicked into his own hands, and threaded his way over for Donnelly to convert. Deciding spells were necessary. In the third there was no alteration, and time was just sounded for the fourth when Bayley (Coal Creek) raced over from a brilliant solo effort, Coal Creek winning by eight points to five. The winning team was as follows; —L. 1 Manuel, J. M'Pherson, D. Manuel,' J. Mercer, B. Gollop, W. Bayley, I. S. Templeton. CROMWELL DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. The adjourned annual meeting of the Cromwell Defence Rifle Club was held on Tuesday, Major Johnson presiding. The secretary being 'still out of the district, an audited balance sheet was not available. However, that presented, together with the report, showed that the first year had ended with a small debit balance. Considering that a good deal had to be spent' on preparing a range and buying targets, a profit for the year was hardly expected. In all other respects the club had a most successful season. Special mention was made of the handsome cup presented by_ Mr L. M'Donald, manager of Cairnmuir Run, for competition. This was in appreciation of the work of members in destroying several hundred wild goats on the run. During the year the Major Brown Cup was won by Rifleman R. Bell, and the president’s trophy by Rifleman Veint. Other trophy winners were: Major Johnson’s trophy. Rifleman _ M'Lachlan; Mr J. Duncan’s trophy, Rifleman G. Chalmers; Mr L. J. Anderson’s trophy, Rifleman F. Middleton. Mr L. Paterson was elected handicapper and Messrs Sanders and Veint range officers. The official opening was fixed for September 26. RAILWAY RIFLE CLUB. The weekly competition of the Railway Rifle Club was the second shoot for Mr Gilchrist’s trophy, close scoring being the order. The scores were:—F. Middleton, 78—1—79; J. C. Parcell, 80—0—80; A. Dewar, 78—scr. —78; J. O’Neill, 78 —1 — 79; L. Paterson, 78—1—79; D. Cahill, 76—2—78; R. Berryman, 70—7—77; W. Veint, 75—0—75; W. Campbell, 72—3 75; A. Hughes, 74 —scr. —74; G. M'Lachlan, 73—scr.—73; J. Boyes, 70 —2 —72; G. Stumbles, 665 —71; D. Nicol, 63—8— 71; R. Hughes, 67—6—70; E. Lynch, 71— 3—74; W. Webb, 76—1—77; J. Webb, 72—3—75; G. Chalmers, 75—2—77; V. Sanders, 77—1—78. With a tie between six competitors, a shoot-off was necess. ry, and F. Middleton was the winner. This competitor also took the rifle button for the week, and D. Cahill the handicap button. In the teams’ shoot Cromwell (453) defeated Railway (441).
