BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS

SOUTH OTAGO

(From Our Own Correspondent.l BALCLUTHA, September 20. RUGBY FOOTBALL. Unfortunately, Toko defaulted to Clutha in the senior knock-out competition which commenced at Balclutha yesterday, and this robbed the competition of a lot of interest. Crescent and Star, however, who were also scheduled to play on the Balclutha Show Ground, gave a very good display, and the spectators got something for their money. The game was very even in the first spell, which ended with no score by either side. In the second spell T. Hughes scored for Crescent, but the kick at goal failed. Star then attacked in great style, and tries were scored by Hurring and S. Davey, the kicks at goal being resultlees. J. Vickers (Crescent) evened the score with a fine try, which W. Hughes failed to enhance. Time was called shortly after (with the score six points all. As it was imperative under the conditions that a decision should be reached, the teams were asked to play for seven minutes longer each way. When play was resumed Crescent played up with great spirit, and tries were scored by Middlemass and Stanaway, the game ending in a victory for Crescent by 12 points to 6 points. In the Boyd Cup fixture between Crescent Juniors and South Otago High School, played at Kaitangata, Crescent triumphed to the tune of 26 points to nil. This leaves three teams still in the competition—viz., Crescent, School, and Toko. SOUTH OTAGO COURSIN':. The South Otago Coursing Club neld an open meeting at Inchclutha yesterday for the Greaney Cup (a five-guinea trophy presented by Mr P. J. Greaney and confined to local dogs). The weather was very warm and hares were fairly plentiful. However, only three decisive courses were run, and there were four undecided. The finals will be run later. PARETAI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting was held in the school on Saturday, 13 members and friends being present. After the usual routine business had been disposed of, it was decided to order a £5 crate of baskets from the Institute for the Blind, Parnell. The subject for the roll-call was “An Ideal Lunch for a Child." Some very nice articles made from scraps were on show, Mrs Dippie winning with a doll’s outfit. After the usual social half-hour afternoon tea was handed round by Mrs P. Aitkenhead and Misses Emma and Dorothy Marshall. UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF. The local Unemployment Committee has been notified by the Central Board in Wellington that an additional £l6 will be available this week, bringing the amount for the week up to £7B. As this could not be divided amongst 100 men (the number on the register), the committee is compelled to adhere to its old policy of providing work for the most necessitous cases. MEN’S GOLF. On the Balclutha links on Saturday, Clark and Landels played the first round of the final for the championship over 36 holes. They finished all square on the eighteenth hole. The niatch will probably be finished next Saturday. A team from the Kaitangata Club visited Balclutha and, after an enjoyable match, the local team won by a majority of six games.
