PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, August 3. A meeting of the local Scottish Society, which was held on Friday night, was well attended. In the absence of Chiet George Ross, Senior Chieftain N. M. Matheson presided. The following officers were nominated for the ensuing year:— Chief, Mr N. M. Matheson; chieftains — Messrs D Ross, J. Philip, J. C. M'Clymont, and E. J. Kelly; committee—Messrs J, Nichol, J. S. Miller. R. Cameron, W. t! Pickett, J. Shaw, J. Purvis, A. M'Gregor, F. W. Robinson. D. Munro, G. Ross, and D. M. Thomson; stewards —Messrs W. M'Gregor, H. Jack, and D. M'Dougall; pipe major, Mr J. Gordon; secretary, Mr F. M'lvor; assistant secre* tary, Mr W. M'Kenney. ,It was decided to hold a social evening for the ladies during September. The clansmen gave a social evening to the chief and chieftains, in return for-similar events given by the latter during the year. Items were rendered by the following:—Pipe selections, Mr R. Cameron; songs—Messrs Cameron, Kelly, Moodie, Brunton, Coutts, and Shaw; stories —lyiessrs Elston, Collins, and Cameron; recitations, Messrs Matheson and MTvor. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Eastern Districts junior Rugby competition came to a close on Saturday. Karitane met School and suffered defeat by 6 points to 3. The first spell ended with no score. In the second spell Dempsey scored and also kicked a penalty goal for School. ■ Karitane scored from a forward rush.' Palmerston met Waikoilaiti at Waikouaiti and suffered defeat by 11 points to 6. Karitane has now won the Junior Shield tor this season. Next Saturday’s matches are as follows: — Seniors: Palmerston v. Waikouaiti, at Palmerston; Seacliff v. Shag Point, at Seaeliff; Dunback a bye.

’ The following are the representative fixtures: —August 29: Eastern Districts v. Maniototo, at Palmerston; September 5: Eastern Districts v. Otago juniors, at Palmerston.
