MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS

During July the following stock was slaughtered at the Oamaru Municipal Abattoirs: —158 head of cattle, 1234 sheep, 26 lambs, and 17 pigs. CORONER’S INQUEST The inquest concerning the death of Mr James MDonald, who was found dead in a cowbyre at Tussocky road on /Sunday morning, was continued before the coroner (Mr W. H. Frith) at the courthouse yesterday morning. Medical testimony was given by Dr Fitzgerald that death was due to sudden heart failure, and a verdict was returned accordingly. UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE The Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester) occupied the chair at the weekly meeting of the Oamaru Unemployment Committee yesterday morning. A circular letter from the Unemployment Board relative to special authority for the payment of wages to an agent of the worker, was received. Mr M'Gregor (Labour inspector) reported that the allocation for this week had been reduced by the Unemployment Board to £4BO, the board Urging the committee to give relief employment to' the most necessitous cases. It was decided to ask' the single men, and married men without children, to stand down .for one day for this week. Mr M'Gregor reported that at the beginning of last week there were 456 registrations pending, 36 new names had been registered, 14 sent to private employment, 26 removed, leaving a 1 balance c£ 450 at the end of the week. Of tnis number 312 had been' employed on relief. works under No. 5 scheme. The following applications from the country, for one man for four weeks in each case, were approved:—Kakauui; Hafca ss; Georgetown ss; Papakaio 15s; Gtiake 10s; Weston ss; Dantrobn. 10s; Hampden 10s; Windsor 10s; All Day Bay 10s; Kurow 10s; Ngapara ss; Oamaru ss. An application from Kurow for a man for planting trees was approved. An extension of time for four weeks was granted in each case in respect to applications from Pukeuri, Windsor, Tokarahi, Herbert, Maheno, and Hilderthorpe. It was resolved to approve and authorise street tree planting by the Oamaru Beautifying Society under No. 5/ scheme. , WAITAKI RUGBY SUB-UNION There was a full attendance oP delegates I at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki i Rugby Sub-union, Mr Turnbull occupying the chair. The Awakino Club wrote explaining the circumstances of the club’s default on July 18. The Maniotolo Sub-union wrote suggesting September 12 as the most suitable date for the proposed Maniototo-Waitaki game. It was resolved to. defer, con eideration until after the seven-a-side tournament. * The North Otago Union wrote giving rulings concerning the status of players t and delegates of a defunct club, and intimating that no decision had yet been arrived at in regard to the date for the return Town v. Country fixture.—The secretary was instructed to write the North Otago Union suggesting August 22 as the most suitable'date, and requesting an early reply. , It was decided to hold a seven-a-side tournament at Duntroon on August 15, ©pen to all-comers.- Mr Carmichael -was appointed assistant secretary to act in conjunction with the Emergency Committee. The following details were agreed to: —Entries to close on August 10, admission Is, to include players, weight limit for schools’ competition -to be Bst, relay* race to be held for four men a team, that a goal-kicking competition be held, and that the schools’ games be commenced at 10.15 and seniors at noon. It was decided to procurer gold medals for the senior competition and relay race, and silver medals for the school boys. . Mr Lawlor’s offer of a prize to the value of 15s for the goal-kicking competition was accepted with thanks. It was agreed to hold a dance in the even ihg. and the secretary was instructed to notify the Referees’ Association request ing the -services of the Referees, and for: warding them complimentary tickets. At the. request of Mr Laird permission was granted the Tokarahi Club to play Omarama, providing the teams could make suitable arrangements. Stewart was granted a transfer from the Southern Club (Waimate) to Awsjkino. ' ; KAKANUI NOTES The Kakanui Athenaeum Committee has recently added several new books by wellknown authors to the library, making a total <ff 120 .volumes added so far this year. These include the first four volumes of Everyman’s Encyclopaedia, which is being published in. 12 paste, and which, when completed, should prove a great asset to the library. Several members of the Kakanui Wesleyan Bible Class journeyed to Oamaru on Saturday evening to attend the annual social of the, Oamaru Wesleyan Bible Class, which took place in the Bungalow. A very enjoyable time waa_ spent with music, games, and competitions, and a

dainty supper added much to a pleasant evening’s entertainment. The local glasshouse owners are very busy at present preparing for the coming season. All the growers nave had a good strike, and the young plants are'coming along splendidly and will soon be ready to plant out. Given favourable weather, everything points to a good season being experienced* locally. One new glasshouse is in the course of construction, a house 100 ft by 22ft, with heating system installed, being erected by Mr J. J. Maffey. BASKET BALL Three basket ball teams from the Timaru • Girls’ High School visited Oamaru on Saturday, and played, their annual matches against the Waitaki girls’ teams. The games were keenly contested, and play was of a high standard. All three matches were won by the visiting teams. Miss Lindsay was the referee for•the A and B games, and Miss Dixon, of Timaru, for the C game. The visitors were afterwards entertained by the Waitaki Girls’ High School. The Oamaru ladies’ team journeyed to Totara on Saturday, and played a match with the Totara ladies’ team. The more experienced Oamaru players secured a win ‘by 9 points to 2. Totara, however, played a good game, and should greatly improve after a few more matches. Miss I. King controlled the game in a very able manner. MAJESTIC PICTURES

NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Mr J. Crowley occupied the chair. , Mr Crowley reported on behalf of the sub-committee that night training would be arranged for the representative team on August 14 and 28.—The action of the sub-committee was approved. The union extended its congratulations to Mr Alan Campbell, a representative player, on winning the heavy-weight boxiaThe acknowledged the union’s appreciation of the Boy Scouts services at the representative match. The South Canterbury Union wrote returning thanks for the hospitality extended to its players at Oamaru and congratulating North Otago on its victory in the representative game. The secretary N was instructed to write thanking the Kurow Domain Board for a concession in ground rent for the domain. The Athletic Club, advised that it' was unable to play the senior match against Dunback.—Received. The Athletic Club was granted transfers for R. Park and I. Clarke from Senior to Junior Grade. A. M'Donald (South Island selector) wrote in connection with nominations for the South Island team, and congratulating North Otago on its victory over South Canterbury.—The secretary’s action in replying was endorsed. . The Waitaki Boys’ High School was granted permission to play its annual matches with the Timaru Boys’ High School at Timaru on August 8. The St. Kevin’s Fourth Grade team was granted permission to play the Palmerston District High School at Palmerston on August 4. The . Oamaru Post Office staff was* granted the use of the Show Grounds on August 29 for a friendly game against the Timaru Post Office staff. Mr Gilchrist reported on the match at Kurow, giving it as his opinion that the ground was unfit for football. The Waitaki Sub-union wrote suggesting August 22 as the date for the return Town v. Country match.—ln view of the adverse reports given by the union representatives on the state of the Kurow ground, the secretary was instructed to advise the sub-unian that the Return match could ' not be played at Kurow, and that the union would agree to offer the net gate to the sub-union if the match was played at Oamaru, probably, either on August 22 or September 5. The Old Boys’ Club was granted the use' of a ground for the old versus present members’ match on a date when the Old Boys have a bye. [ J The Ashburton Union advised that September 19 was more suitable than September 5 for the representative fixture. The date suggested was confirmed. Accounts totalling £6O Os Od were passed for payment. It was decided to play the junior representative match against Eastern District 'at Palmerston on the same day as the Town v. Country match. B 2 beat Arawa B 1, Athletic B 3 beat Pirata C nil. In a friendly match between Windsor A and Pirata A the former secured a win by four goals to two. ROSE OF OAMARU LODGE At the monthly meeting of the Rose of Oamaru Lodge, Sister Upchurch presided over a large attendance of members. Two candidates were initiated into the Order, and five new members were proposed. An enjoyable social hour was then spent by those present. YOUNG MEN’S BIBLE CLASS There was a good attendance of members at the second meeting held by the newly-formed St. Paul’s Intermediate Young Men’s Bible Class. Four new members received a hearty welcome. The evening was devoted to skittles, pingpong, basket ball, and boxing. OAMARU LADIES’ TRAMPING v CLUB Another pleasant outing was senjoyed by the Training Club on Saturday. Leaving the Main road at Boundary Creek, the party followed the creek for a fair distance, and were met by

Mrs Calder with afternoon tea, which was much appreciated. The party then wended its way across the paddock and up the gully, crossing Boundary Creek no less than 25 times, before the fluming was reached. The water race was followed as far as the tunnel, after which the party retraced its steps, altogether covering a distance of about 14 miles. OAMARU FIRE BRIGADE The monthly meeting of the Oamaru Fire Brigade was held last night. Superintendent Couper presided. J. Cagney forwarded £5 in acknowledgment of the brigade’s services at a recent fire. —Received with thanks. Thanks were also accorded _ various donors of books to the brigade library. The resignation of an hon. member (Mr Curwood) was received with regret. An invitation from the Southern Districts Association for the holding of the 1932 conference was received. Superintendent Couper tendered hie resignation as treasurer. —Accepted with regret, Deputy-superintendent Heron being appointed to the vacancy. A. S. Blackledge was elected an active member. The secretary was authorised to approach the Borough Council in reference to the firemen attending. at the Opera House during performances. Two nominations for honorary membership were received. OAMARU ATHEN/EUM The monthly meeting of the Oamaru Atheiueum Committee was held last night. Mr D. Simpson presided.. It was decided to add 20 volumes to the library. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr J, A. Macpherson, M.P., for his Assistance in connection with the proclamation under the Public Bodies Leasing Act, 1908. Accounts totalling £4l 8s 5d were passed for payment. The librarian reported that 22 volumes of fiction and one volume of travel were received during the month. Seven adults had joined up and four had left. The number of adult subscribers on the roll was 397, and 97 juveniles, making a total of 494. A total of 4705 books were issued during the month, as follows:—Fiction 3015, science 14, history 17, biography 22, travel 53, poetry 22, general 32, theology 2, magazines 1528. 1 AIRPORT FOR OAMARU Flying Officer Olsen, accompanied by representatives of the Otago Aero Club, has inspected the ground at Hilderthorpe, nine miles from town, reporting favourably as ta its suitability for an airport for Oamaru. He met the Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester) and members of the Borough Council Airport Committee, and suggested that 100 acres should be cleared of stones, a work which might be carried out under the unemployment scheme. The Mayor, has intimated thqft he will convene a meeting of the Airport Committees of thb Borough and County Councils at an early date to consider the proposal. PERSONAL Queen’s Hotel. —Mr H. G.
