HOPE GIVEN UP
THE SOUTHERN CLOUD PUBLIC DEEPLY MOVED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, April 1. “ From the evidence before me I have reluctantly concluded that there is no longer reason to believe that the pilot and passengers of the missing Southern Cloud are alive,” stated the Minister of Defence (Mr Chifley). “Early action will be taken by the Air Accidents Investigation Committee to investigate the circumstances in which the catastrophe occurred. The committee will hold its meetings in public in view of the fact that the general public throughout Australia has been deeply moved by this distressing occurrence.” BELATED REPORT BY JOCKEY. SYDNEY, April 1. (Received April 2, at 1 a.m.) The only development in regard to the Southern Cloud is a belated report by several apprenticed jockeys at Mentone, a suburb of Melbourne, that they heard the drone of a triple-engine aeroplane overhead in the mist on the afternoon on which the Southern Cloud disappeared. Mentone is ou the foreshore of Port Philip Bay.
