OBITUARY

LORD STAMFORDHAM KING’S PRIVATE SECRETARY. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, March 31. The death is announced of Lord Stamfordham. Lord Stamfordshara, who had been private secretary to the King since 1910, was formerly the Rt. Hon. Arthur John Bigge, and received his title in 1911. He was born in 1849, and entered the Royal Artillery in 1869. He served in the Zulu War in 1878-79, being aide-de-camp to Major-general Sir Evelyn Wood. He became groom-in-waiting to Queen Victoria in 1880, and in the same year was appointed her assistant private secretary. From 1895 to 1901 he served as the Queen’s private secretary, then becoming private secretary to the Prince of Wales. He was made a privy councillor in 1910. His only son was killed in action in the Great War so that the title dies with him.
