SWIMMING
OTAGO CENTRE MEETING A meeting of the Otago Centre, New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, was held last evening in the Y.M.C.A. Buildings. The president (Mr J. L. MTndoe) was chairman, and the following delegates were present:—Messrs B. Kerr, N. D. Gillies, A. Findlay, W. N. Buckland, S. Fogg, W. Williams, and E. C. Isaacs. The chairman referred to the excellent performance registered by H. E. Walker and Miss J. Eggers at the New Zealand Diving Championships. The centre was very sanguine of their success when they left Dunedin, and they had swept the board. They were to be congratu-. lated on their success, and the Dunedin Club was to be commended for the efforts made in sending the divers to the championships. It was very satisfactory to know that Mr Walker and Miss Eggers had returned with two wins to the credit of Otago. The next championships would be held at Timaru, and it was hoped to send a very strong team. It was decided to forward letters of thanks to Messrs A. W. Hazelwood, A. Robinson, and R. Steel for the use of their launches during the harbour swim for the Batt Cup. The centre appointed the following officials to assist at the New Zealand University championships:—Starter, Mr W.'Jenkins; check starter, Mr N. M. Sutherland; diving judges—Messrs J. L. M'lndoe, W. H. Buckland, and E. H. James; handicapper, Mr W. Jenkins; referee, Mr J. L. M'lndoe; timekeepers— Messrs T. Fogg, T. P. Williamson, F. J. Townsend, and A. Greig. The local officer (Mr W. H. Buckland) reported that the arrangements for the Batt Cup race were very complete,, and were also carried out in a most creditable manner. The officials, those in charge Of boats and launches, and the swimmers all played their part with credit. He mentioned that in view of the cramped space available 1 for attending' swimmers when they left the water at the finish it would be very desirable on future occasions to make provision for keeping the public from crowding on to the floating pontoon in front of the Harbour Board’s offices. — The letter was received, and the chairman stated that the suggestions made by Mr Buckland would receive due cousideration by the centre next season. There was a discussion on the question of stimulating interest in swimming throughout the year, particularly during the summer season. The chairman said he was of the opinion that swimmers should be called together and addresses, and the problems which faced the centre and the reasons why swimmers in general did not receive the support of the public should be explained. The discussion that evening was opportune, and it would, no doubt, bear fruit in the near future.
