The contest for the Interuniversity Eight-oared Championship, which is being conducted in conjunction with the interuniversity athletic, tournament during the Easter week-end, is being contested by four crews representing Canterbury College, Victoria College (Wellington),’ Auckland University College, and Otago University. The previous performances of the Otago men are as follow: — Muleahy stroked Xavier College at Melbourne University, and rowed bow in the Tasmanian eight. He is a cool and reliable oar. Macfarlane rowed in Wanganui Collegiate School eight. He fills the responsible position of No. 7 very well. Titchener is a rugged and serviceable oarsman. He rowed as a, junior oar for North End Club lately. Hartnell is the heaviest man in the boat and is a serviceable oar. He uses his weight to full advantage. M'Alpine rowed with success for Otago Club. He is a strong and wiry oar and should, be, a great help to the boat. M'Gavin rowed in the light-weight Maidens for Petone Club in Wellington. A very sound man. Barron stroked Wanganui Collegiate School four in 1928. A very neat oar, who uses his ready weight to the best advantage. _ Platts is a good bow man. Ha rowed in Auckland University- College eight last year. The crew is being coached by Mr Shane, but owing to lack of time before Easter, have not had adequate training, and have only been able to have five practice spins in the eight. The- Canterbury College men's previous performances are as follow; T. H. M'Combs, str (list), stroked the last two crews. He was stroke for the Canterbury Rowing Club Junior Four this year, won Junior Double Sculls and started in Championship Double Sculls. H. C. Holland, No. 5 (12st 41b) rowed 6 and 7 respectively in last two crews and in Canterbury Junior Four this year, G. E. Watt, No. 6 (list lib) rowed 2 in A.U.C. Eight last year, and this year No. 2in Waitemata Maiden Four. S. B. Wallace, No, 7 (12st 51b) occupied this •eat in last year’s crew. D; V. Wilson, No. 4 (12st 31b), has little previous experience, but is a most promising oarsman. H. Waymouth, No. 3 (list 4lb), was rowing in this position in last year’s crew. D. V. Alston, No. 2 (lOst 121 b), has had a very good season as No. 2 in CanterburyRowing Club’s Youths’ Fours. V. A. Smith, how (lOst 51b), has occupied this seat in the last two crews, and was bow of the Junior Four this season. The cox, R. E. Garrett (Bst 101 b) steered last year’s winning crew. Emergency: T. R. Evans (list 101 b) rowed 4 in last year’s crew and 2 in C.R.C. Maiden Four this year.
