AMERICAN SENATE

VETERANS’ LOAN RELIEF BILL. PRESIDENT’S OPPOSITION. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, February 19. (Received Feb. 20, at 9 p.m.) Tiie Senate, despite President Hoover’s opposition, passed by 72 votes to 12 the Veterans’ Loan Relief Bill for the adjustment of compensation certificates from 22j.- to 50 per cent, of their face value. The Bill has already been passed by the House. It is estimated that the cost will be 700,000,000 dollars. President Hoover is expected to veto the Bill within 48 hours, but it is virtually a foregone conclusion that the Bill will then pass over the veto. Senator Reed (Pennsylvania), who admitted that the Bill would pass, supported President Hoover vigorously. He asked: “Why under heaven, in times of stress, should we pour out money for the benefit of one particular group at the expense of every other group ? ”
