QUEENSTOWN NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN. February 17. THE WEATHER. With the exception of a little rain on Thursday, the weather has been fine throughout the week. To-day it has been very warm, the atmosphere seeming laden during the afternoon. Hay-making lias bean going most satisfactorily, several fanners having finished stacking and en-silajge-making. Turnips are doing exceptionally well, too, so there will be an abttndance ot winter feed. The readings taken at the local meteorological station for the seven days ended February 15 are: — '

BOWLING. The singles championship matches are now well under way, the results to date being:—Bailey 20, Piddington 19, Nelson, 17, Scheit 16, Scandrett 22, Griflin 15, Munro 26. Hannan 12, Davidson 20, Riardan 13. fin the Doubles Ferns Bailey and Nelsoa 29 defeated Davidson and Scott 20. REGATTA CLUB. The annual meeting of the Queenstown Regatta Club took place on Thursday evejning, Mr H. C. Buckham occupying the chair in the absence of Mr L. J. Lynch, president. The report disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs. The balance sheet gave the receipts as £l3B I7s Bd, and the expenditure as £137 2s .lid. The following office-bearers were elected: Patrons—Messrs Hugh Mackenzie, sen., Hon. A. F. Hawke, Messrs W. A. Bodkin. M.P., P. Reid, R. M. Paterson, R. A. Anderson, and J. T. N. Grant. The vice-presidents were re-elected, with three exceptions, .these being residents who had left, the district. Mr D. F. Macdonald was nominated for the dual position of seccetary and treasurer. The meeting was then adjourned in order that the proposal to hold the customary regatta at Easter might be discussed at a fuller meeting. MASONIC INSTALLATION. Bfro. George Thomas was installed last evesfing as worshipful master of Lake Lod[ge of Oplnr. The installing master was Rt. Wor. Bro. Alexander Derbie, Prow. G.M. of Southland, and assisting him were Wor. Bro. James Manson, Assistant D.C., Rt. Wor. Bro. F. A. Stearns, P. Prov. G.M., Rt. Wor. Bro. Irvine, P.S.W., and other Grand Lodge officers. , The installation of Bro. John Scurr as worfihipful master of Arrow Lodge Kilwinning and the investiture of officers for the year 1931-32 took place in the lodgeroom at Arrowtown to-night. UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF. During the week Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., met. members of the local Unemployment Relief Committee and explained some of the provisions and working of the Act, more particularly the No. 5 scheme, of which it was hoped the Lake Coumty Council and Queenstown Borough Council would take advantage. Sneaking on behalf of the County Council, Mr Leo Lee, chairman of that body, said that owing to the scattered nature of the county it could not afford to undertake work as outlined. It would be cheaper for the council to employ labour under contract. . T3he Queenstown Borough Council finds itsdif in a more advantageous position inasmuch as local unemployed have their homes in the town, thus eliminating the expense to the council of providing accommodation and transport. On Friday evening a meeting of the committee was held, whurn it was decided to give employment to Idle six registered unemployed offering on formation work in Upper Ballarat street. The men commenced yesterday, the wage given being 14s per day. OBITUARY. The death took place at Glenorchy on the 10th inst. of Mrs Williamson, wife of Mr Donald Williamson, of Glenorchy and Massburn. Her passing was comparathiely sudden, as she had a paralytic seizure just before retiring to bed on Monday, and she died shortly after midnigjht. Mrs Williamson, who was born at •Cromwell 59 years ago, was the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William Henderson, of Roaring Meg. She wan married in 1890 to the late Andrew Ws.therston, and they made their first hojne at the Nevis. Later they went to. GUibston, and subsequently settled at Ghinorchy, head of Lake Wakatipu, where Ml* Watherston died. In 1019 Mrs Watherston married Mr Williamson, and she l continued to reside at Glenorchy, The deceased was a most enthusiastic war worker, being a t prominent member of boih the Patriotic and Red Cross Societies. She also gave practical support to local sports bodies, while her sympathies were always with every clijiritable object or cause that needed assistance. Mrs Williamson had a family of five sons and two daughters by her fiiTst marriage, these being Messrs James au<l John Watherston (Feilding), Messrs Domald, Robert, and Alexander (Glenordhy), Mrs John Forbes and Miss Bessie Wiitherston (Glenorchy). Other near relatives are six brothers—Messrs William, Donald, and John Henderson (Arrowtown), George and Alexander Hendeivson (Lowburn), and James Henderson (Lindis), and three sisters—Mrs William Clark and Mrs Ernest Saunders (Lowburn) and Mrs Andrew Reid (Dunedin). The interment took place at Glenordhy on Wednesday, the Rev. J. Stanley Murray, of St. Andrew’s Church, Queenstown, being the officiating minister. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND. The amount credited to the local Earthquake Sufferers’ Relief Fund to date is £lf)s odd. This, however, does not represent the sum subscribed, as two donations amounting to £56 were forwarded to the Southland fund before the Mayor's list was opened. CANCER RESEARCH FUND. .“District subscriptions to the Cancer Research Fund now total £156 Is. There arc still some outposts that have to report the result of collections. MAGISTRATE’S COURT TRANSFERS. Mr Fred Stoop, who has been clerk to the Queenstown Magistrate’s and Warden’s Courts for nearly seven years and a-half, received notice yesterday of his transfer to Cromwell, where he will succeed Mr Bladder, who goes to Gore. Mr P. W. J. Cockorill, of Invercargill, will fill the vacancy at Queenstown. The changes take effect early in March. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs J Lynch, visitors from Siam, spent a few days at Wakatipu recently. Professor and Mrs Riddell, of Palmerston North, included Queenstown in their South Island itinerary. Dr A. Tennant, Wellington, was in Queenstown for a few days last week. Professor and Mrs Hiewitson, who have been spending some weeks in their Queenstown house, retilrnfcd to Dunedin on Wednesday. They were acompanied by the Misses Rule. Mrs W. A. Anderson returned on Saturday evening from a visit; to Dunedin and Invercargill. Mr J. M'B. Gillandars, inspector of machinery, arrived here at the week-end on departmental business. Miss Vera Wilkin, who has been a guest at Mount Nicholas Station, Lake wakatipu, for the past month, •returned to Dunedin yesterday. Mr and Mrs G. C. Roger arrived here from Dunedin last night. Major and Mrs Rice arc spending a few days in Queenstown. Mr and Mrs W. H. Bony returned on Saturday from a visit to Timaru and Christchurch. Dr W, A. Anderson left; here this morning on his annual holidays. During ins absence Dr A. M. Scoti, of Invercargill. will carry on his pracUice. Mr Hugh Jenkins, of the literary staff of the Wanganui Chronicle, and his wife arrived here at the week-end.

The Rev. 11. C. L. Gant and Mrs Gant, of Winton, are here ou their honeymoon. Mr Mark Faigan, M.L.C., and Mrs Faigan, of Wellington, are spending a holiday at Queenstown. Dr and Mrs Portcous, Dunedin, Pave been here during the week. Mr Stuart H. Brown, of the well-known Paisley firm of Brown and Poison, was among recent visitors to Queenstown. Mrs Carnegie Gardner and Miss Gardner, or Tuatapere, are visiting at Coronet Peak Station.
