AMERICAN ATHLETES.

- APPEARANCE AT NAPIER, (Per United Press Association.) NAPIER, January 25. The touring American- athletes appeared in Napier on Saturday afternoon, putting up some good performances, In the shot putt, Harlow_ Rothert made a throw of 47 feet 5 inches, which betters P. Munro’s Australian and New Zealand record of 46 feet Oi inches. He also threw the javelin 182 feet 4 inches, and the discus between 138 and 140 feet, the latter distance being stepped out and not measured. George Simpson cut out the 220 Yards .on a straight track in 21 l-ssec, which is l-ssec better than the New Zealand record for a straight track, and in the 100 Yards he covered the distance in 9 4-ssec, equalling the New Zealand record. Kiser, who is still suffering from the effects of the sea voyage, ran the mile in 4min 31eec, and 440 Yards in 52 3-Ssec. W. Brady (Wellington), the Dominion high jump champion, also made an appearance, making a jump of sft 10m, while in the pole vault he cleared 9ft lOin, both of which heights have never before been done on the_ ground. ■■ The conditions were ideal, _ the. day being fine, with very little wind. The attendance was 1200, which is the largest that~has ever been present at an athletic meeting in Hawke’s Bay.
