BROADSIDING.

GOOD FINISHES WITNESSED. BUCHANAN STRIKES FORM. If close finishes rather than fast times constitute a Rood meeting, then Saturday night’s broadsiding must be considered the finest seen at the Dunedin stadium this season. The handicapping was, in almost every race,_ remarkably good, with the result that in a number of events only a few yards separated the first and second riders, while throughout the evening there was little of that “ procession ” riding which robs a race of practically all its interest for the spectators. The weather was beautifully fine and the attendance totalled about 4000. Once again Frogley was the outstanding rider, although from the point of view of spectacular broadsiding Buchanan was probably the finest performer on the track. Saturday night was the first occasion on which he lias really been seen at his best, and there were few among those present who would not readily admit that his riding more than compensated for his rather disappointing performances in the past. He took some tremendous slides on the corners, his shoulders almost brushing the cinders as he skidded round in a manner that brought the crowd to its feet time after time. If he lacked Frogley’s steadiness nr*l speed, he was more than his equal at brilliant cornering. Unwin and Mangham both rode well, and were prominent throughout the meeting, securing a good share of the prize money. Nesbit lived up to the promise which he showed the previous week, riding consistently well. He fully deserved liis win in the Ford Golden Helmet race, and the ovation which he received when the result was announced bore testimony to his popularity with the crowd. The English rider, Norman Evans, was again unlucky. On his first appearance for the evening, in the Roslyn Handicap, he crashed heavily, and was unable to ride again during the meeting. He was coming out of the south bend in the lead from Unwin, when, just as he was straightening un from his slide, he was thrown forward over the handle-bars, to land in a heap at the foot of the fence. His machine, released from control, somersaulted. and, leaping into _ the air, foil on top of him, the engine still running furiously. It was later reported that, although badly shaken and bruised, he had escaped serious injury. The following are the results: — FORD GOLDEN HELMET SCRATCH RACE.. First Heat.—J. Nesbit 1. A. Rait 2. W. Blair 3. Also started: J. Young. Young was first into the corner, but Nesbit passed him on the bend, and was soon well out in the lead. Also started: D. Miller. The race resolved itself into a general mix up, both Blair and Miller coming off, while Nesbit, who appeared to be confused as to the number of laps gone, finally pushed his machine home over the last few yards. Blair finished a long way back. Time, 113 3-ssec. ' With two straight-out wins to his credit Nesbit won the helmet from the holder, Young. SECOND DIVISION' HANDICAP. First Heat. —B. Henning (Bsec) 1.
