CITY POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, May 21, (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) CHARGE OF ASSAULT. Walter Finlay Dore, who was represented by Mr J. B. Thomson, was charged with having assaulting James Woodford, and on the application of Senior-Sergeant Quartermain, was remanded until June 30, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of 450 and one surety of £SO or two of £Bs, conditional on his reporting daily to the police. THEFT. Natt Daws, alias Andrews, an Indian, appeared for sentence, having previously pleaded guilty to stealing three coats valued at £3 15s, the property of Ghippa Daya.—Mr A. G. Neill, wno appeared for the accused, stated that the latter had gone into a shop and was handed a parcel by the woman in charge, who mistook him for Chippa Daya. The accused was under the influence of liquor at the time and was unaware of what he was doing when he took the coats. Counsel asked that he he. given another chance. The magistrate said that he could see nothing in the accused’s favour, and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. A VAGRANT SENTENCED. Peter M'Lachlan Allan. was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond.— Constable Garnon gave evidence that he had known the accused for two years. During that time witness had never known him to do any work, and had frequently seen him loitering around the wharves, the Queen’s Gardens and Maclaggan street.—Senior-Sergeant Quartermain stated that the accused had been convicted of being idle and disorderly about six weeks previously, and had been ordered to come up for sentence if, called on within six months.--—His Worship remarked that it was obvious the accused was a confirmed vagrant, and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
