MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Maniototo County Council was held in the countv chambers, Naseby, on Wednesday, May 7. There were present: Cra N. Nicolson (chairman) , H. W. Davis, E. Morgan. R. bcott, T. A. Lowis, W. Howell, W M Matbewson, P. Aitfcen, and Thomas Hall Prior to commencing the business of tne meeting, the chairman made reference to the death of the late Dr Harrison, and a motion of condolence was passed to the relatives. The ranger and poundkeeper reported that seven head of cattle had been impounded andi 10 head released before reaching the pound. The pound fees were £1 is 6d and ranging fees IDs. —The report was approved. , The health inspector reported that 31 inspections had been made during the period ended March 31, and 13 requisitions had been served. Details of inspections ot licensed houses were forwarded for the council s information.—The report was ai> proved. Mrs E. M. Morgan wrote complaining ot the unsatisfactory manner in which a gate was erected on a road near Wil-liamson's.—-It was decided that the matter be lotc in the hands of the chairman and engineer, Mr C, P. Harrex wrote asking for improvements to be made to the Downs road and also to be advised of the cost tor the use of the council's power grader tor improving a private road.—lt was left to the engineer to' have the Down road graded as requested by Mr Harrex and to advise him that the charge for tne hire of the council's grader was £3 per day. Mr E. T. Shand waited upon the counml as a deputation from the Ratepayers' Association, and urged the council to consider further _ the matter before deciding to proceed with the erection of a bridge over the Kyeburn River at Scott’s lane, ine present time was odb of depression generally, and he could assure the council that the ratepayers would appreciate any reduction possible in the amount of rates, levied for -the coming year. The association was out to assist the council in any way possible and urged the council ™ The chairman stated that Mr Shand s representations would be considered when the estimates for the current year were before the council that afternoon. The erection of the proposed bridge at Scott’s lane had been held over for over three years, and tenders for carrying out the work would come befoe the council at that meeting. Mr John Preston, Waikouaiti, forwarded a new system for the allocation ot heavy traffic fees in highways districts Nos. 16 and 17 whereby | the fees collected would be disbursed on the basis of 63 per cent on capital value and 50 jper cent, on mileages of metalled roads. The matter was referred to the clerk and engineer and the clerk was directed to write and thank Mr Preston for his interest in the matter.

Graham, poundkeeper, made application for _ the council to supply the pound house with a water tank as the present water supply was unsatisfactory.—lt was decided that a 400-gallon tank be procured and erected at the pound house. —Mr R, W. Allan, Taieri Lake, made application for permission to place a pipe under the road near Heeney's Creek bridge for the purpose of watering stock. It was decided that the application be granted subject to the work being carried out to the satisfaction of the county engineer. The district engineer. Public Works Department, notified that applications for road grants would have to be lodged prior to June 11. —The engineer was directed to prepare a schedule for consideration at the next council meeting. .It wap decided to defer consideration ofvthe erection of the Kyeburn bridge until tenders for the work were opened. i.he Question of proceeding with the erection of this bridge was then discussed. Owing to pressure of bridge maintenance work, it was necessary to hold

over the Cambrian track work. Kyeburn Riding.—A quantity of gravel was spread on the Kyeburn River road near Station Creek. Concrete intake and outlet were added to Scott's lane culvert. Ihe filling for stop-banka at the Houndburn culverts has been commenced. I recommend that, on the weather breaking, the tractor-tip trucks be employed on S. Mores road gravelling. Idaburn Riding,—The approaches to Harrex and Hayes Idaburn bridges require approximately 200 cubic yards of filling. The decking of these bridges is being overhauled and the spacing improved. A culvert was repaired on the Woolshed road, surfacing carried out on Reefs road, and culverts cleared on J. Nicolson’s ,road. ' Hyde Riding—The rocky siding above Annatt a bridge and the broken section south of this on the Hyde-Rock and,Pillar road were gravelled. A bad corner above J. Christie's on the Hyde-Kokonga road was improved. The deviation at Kokonga Slip is completed and fenced, A 15-inch culvert was placed at the Kokonga railway junction. Maintenance gravel was spread between the Six-mile and Hyde Hall, Heeney’s Creek bridge is nearly completed. Serpentine Riding.—The filling at Loganburn bridge was completed. Light grading was carried out on the Linburn road, the Deep Creek road, the Loganburh Ford road, and at Andy’s Creek approach and re-forming op the old Dunstan road, Styx to Rooklands. Ho. 3 grader is now proceeding to Lower Gimmerburn roads. Paerau runs gravelling and Linburn runs road are completed. Pnketoi Riding.—T ( he filling near the Hall weir bridge is completed and requires gravel spread later. One hundred and forty cubic, yards of gravel were spread on Hall’s road. The scooping of Rocky Creek below the Ranfurly-Patearoa road is completed. Construction of Cogan’s bridge is nearly completed. Contract No. 177 has gravelling completed on Hall’s, M'Erlane’a, Gibson's, and part of Puketoi runs road completed. Grading was arried out on the Puketoi runs road. St. Bathans Loop Highway.—Light grading was carried out from Becks to Cumbrian, and the cross section is being improved between Two Mile and the Dunstan Greek. Broken hand railing at Shepherd’s Creek bridge was repaired. The channels for the large culvert near the Dunstan were opened out and gravel raked in on the Becks-Cambrian section. Palmerston-Queenstown and ShagLander Creek Highways.—Grading was carried out from the Hills Creek junction to Lauder Creek, and a half-mile at the Boundary are scarified. Filling at Swinburn bridge is completed. Maintenance gravel was spread near Becks bridge. A 40-foot concrete ford was placed at the West Eweburn. Tenders are called for, gravelling the Shag-Douglae .Hill section. Ida Valley Railway Station-Vincent. — Repairs were carried out to Spain’s bridge, Waipiata-Styx.—The gravelling contract on the Styx Hill is commenced. Netting was added at the Styx bridge approach. The creek crossings at Patearoa were improved. Tenders are called for Rocky Creek bridge.
