MOTOR CAR TRAGEDY.
ONE PASSENGER KILLED. WOMAN’S SKULL FRACTURED. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, May 9. A collision between two cars took place on the Hamilton-Morrinsville road near Newstead, four miles from Hamilton, at about 10 o’clock last evening. The victims are:— Killed: Thomas B. Shaw, aged 23, a son of Mr David Shaw, farmer, of Tauwhare. Injured; Winifred Randle, aged 19, a daughter of Mr P. Randle, assistant manager of the Matangi Glaxo Factory, a fractured skull and head injuries. The car was driven by H. Shaw, of Tauwhare, a cousin of deceased, and was occupied by T. Brown, Miss Randle, and deceased. It was going In the direction of Hamilton, and collided head on with a car driven by L. H. Monteith, farmer, of Eureka, who was accompanied by a brother, A. F. Monteith. The Monteiths are members of the Marist senior Rugby team at Hamilton, and were returning from football practice. Miss Randle and T. Shaw suffered shocking head injuries, from which the latter succumbed at 3.30 this morning. Miss Randle suffered a severe fracture of the base of the skull and extensive head injuries. Her condition is grave. Both cars were- extensively damaged. The deceased and Miss Randle were in the back seat, and in view of the tangled wreckage the other occupants of the cars had miraculous escapes. Apart from minor bruises, scratches, and shock, none of the others was hurt. The night was foggy, and Mr Shaw is said to have been dazzled by the headlights of the approaching car.
