OPHIR NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPHIR, March I. WEATHER SUMMARY. The following is the report of the Ophir meteorological station for the month of February, 1930, standard time being observed:—
Average reading of barometer at 9 a.m., 30.12 in; highest (February 9), 30.42 in; lowest (February 16), 29.66 in; extreme range, .76in.
Average shade temperature at 9 a.m., 59.9 degrees; highest (February 16), 72.4 degrees; lowest (February 20), 49.8 degrees (average for January, 59.6 degrees;for February, 1929, 61.5 degrees). Shade temperature: Average maximum, 75.6 degrees (January, 69.6 degrees; February, 1929, 75.6 degrees). Average minimum, 45.6 degrees (January, 45,5 degrees; February, 1929, 44.6 degrees). Approximate mean, 60.6 degrees (January, 57.5 degrees; February, 1929, 60.1 degrees). The highest maximum was 88.7 degrees on February 7; the lowest minimum, 35.8 degrees on February 20. The figures for 1929 were: Highest Maximum, 87.9 degrees; lowest minimum, 31.4 degrees). Minimum grass temperature: Average, 38.4 degrees (January, 39.1 degrees; February, 1929, 37.0 degrees). Hignest (February 11), 53,7 degrees; lowest (February 20), 29.0 degrees. The temperature fell to 32.0 degrees and lower on six mornings (January eight mornings; February, 1929, eight mornings). The lowest reading in February, 1928, was 25.9 degrees; in February, 1927, 22.1 degrees.
Maximum solar radiation; Average, 115.2 degrees; highest (February 2), X 37.0 degrees; lowest (February 24), 90.8 degrees. The temperature exceeded 120 degrees on nine days, and ranged from 100 degrees to 120 degrees on 16 days. Average dry-bulb and wet-bulb: 9 a.m., dry 59.9 degrees, wet 54.9 degrees; 3 p.m„ dry 73.6 degrees, wet 62.4 degrees. Mean relative humidity: 9 a.m., 71.0 per cent.; 3 p.m., 52.0 per cent, of saturation. Average clearness of sky: 7 a.m., 60 per cent; 9 a.m., 58 per cent.; 7 p.m., 53 per cent._; 10 p.m., 67 per cent. Wind, recorded at 9 a.m.: Calm, 19 days; N., half day; N.E, one days and ahalf; E., half day; S., half day; S.W., one day; W., one day; N.W., four days. Rainfall: February 16, 70 points; February 19, one point; February 22, six points; February 23, seven points; total, .84m on four days. The preceding six years average for February is 1.25 in on 6.7 days.
Other phenomena: Hoar frost, nil; dew seven mornings; fog, nil; mist, nil; solar halo, radius 18 degrees on February 22, 10.30 to 11.30 a.m.
February 16: Light snowfall on the Dunstan Range to about 3000 feet altitude; thawed off on two following days. General remarks: A normal summer month; somewhat dry, but free from prolonged N.W. winds. The average maximum temperature was six degrees higher than for ’January. The pastures are in very good condition.
PRESENTATIONS. In view of their marriage in Dunedin eai-ly next week Miss Ivy Penglase and tx. A. (Bert) Hoskin were the recipients of several presents recently. On Wednesday evening the employees of Messrs Hoskin Bros, met in the store with several friends. Mr G. Clark presided, and presented Mr Hoskin with a handsome xylonite toilet set for Miss Penglase and a purse of money for himself. Mr Clark spoke briefly, mentioning the many good qualities of the couple, and, in the name of the company, wished them all happiness in their life together. Messrs §■ Larson, J. Hoskin, and H. Hoskin also spoke. After suitable response by Mr Hoskin a very pleasant evening was spent with songs and recitations.
On Thursday afternoon about a score of ladies mot in Mrs Wroblemski’s huose.
where Mrs S. Leask, on behalf of the ladies present, presented Miss Penglase with a full-sized marcella quilt as a token of their goodwill. Mrs R. Craig and Mrs Wrobleneki also spoke briefly. Miss Penglase thanked the ladies for the pleasant afternoon and their gift. She said she was sorry to leave Ophir, and she promised a welcome to any who .might come to her future home.
