RIFLE SHOOTING

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. GOOD PROGRESS MADE. IDEAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. (Pee United Press AssociATibN.) TRENTHAM. March 1. It is many years since such excellent weather prevailed at Trentham, although from a marksman’s point 'of view the sun glare was not advantageous. In the morning the breeze veered suddenly from the left to rear, which upset those who are intimately acquainted with the vagaries of the range, but the afternoon was all that could be desired. There are many of the older shots who are well down the list, and their hope of improving their positions lies in the longer ranges, which will be fired on Monday. So well has the meeting advanced that provided the weather holds, the concluding events will be got off on Tuesday, the King’s Fifty being fired in the middle of the afternoon.

The most consistent competitor in the Belt series has been P. Berry (Tararua Club), who is leading in the Trentham Aggregate. In the Canterbury match he registered six bulls in succession, having discarded a three and a four as sighters, L. -Benton . (Featherston), who finished second in this match, found the centre of the target an equal number of times, but less consistently. L. Old (Karori) had a splendid run, which was marred by an outer.

In ■ the Auckland match D. Roots (Patea) displayed some of his best form with the rifle, and if he performs as consistently at the longer ranges it would not be surprising if he‘is again the champion, which would make the fourth occasion on which he has secured the honour. H. Searle (Nelson) has . done well. Although classed ns n tyro, he has had considerable shooting experience in other parts of New Zealand. Last year P. Goldfinch was fifth in the Trentham Aggregate, and is second this year. In the Wellington match W. M’lver (Petone) finished ■ five below the possible. Last year MTver was fifteenth. The members of the Kiwi Defence Eiflle Club fired a practice match on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, and conditions were good at 500 yards, where some very good scores were registered. At 600 .yards the light became very dull, and this, combined with a tricky rear wind, resulted in the scores not being so good. Rifleman F. Clayton (47—44—91) put up an excellent performance. Tbe conditions were 10 shots and one optional sighter at 500 and 600 yards. The following are the results:—
