ALEXANDRA NOTES.

(From Ode Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, February 26. ALEXANDRA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The Alexandra Horticultural Society held its annual show in the Town Hall last Saturday afternoon and evening. There was a large attendance of the public, and competition was keen. The entries totalled 960, as against 860 last year. A feature of the show was the wonderful display of cut flowers. The president (Mr Sorrell) was again successful in winning the Jopp Cup for most points in vegetables. Messrs R. Dawson and Co. were once more ssuccessful annexing the champion shield for most points in the show, Mr E. A. Hamel, of Dunedin, acted as judge of .the cut flowers, vegetables, and pot plants; Mrs ■ Secular and Mrs George Naylor, of Matakanui, of the cookery and industrial; Mr Lloyd Williams, of the fruit; and Misses Hare and N. Robertson, of the juvenile section. A number of musical aud other items were contributed during the evening, and Mr Hamel addressed those present and congratulated the society on the very fine exhibits. The keen interest displayed by the president (Mr C. B. Sorrell) and the secretary (Mr Meehaelis) resulted in the bringing of this year’s show to a most successful issue.

Cookery and preserves: Miss Marshall. Cookery, baking, etc.: Miss Marshall. Vegetables; Mr C. B. Sorrell., Fne arts and sewing: Mrs Meehaelis.

Special prizes were awarded as follows:—Collection of asters: Mrs William M’Donnell. Collection of gallardias: Mr C. B. Sorrell. Premier gladiolus: Mrs William M’Donnell, Collection of marigolds: Mr C. B. Sorrell. Premier Drummondi: Mr C. B. Sorrell. Premier rose: Mr Kinnaird. Collection of annuals: Mr C. B. Sorrell. Collection of carrots: Mr C, B. Sorrell. Heaviest cabbage; Mr C. B. Sorrell. Collection of onions: Mr G. Terry. Collection of parsnips: Mr C, B. Sorrell. Collection of potatoes: Mr G. Terry. Six stalks of rhubarb: Mrs A. James. Collection of five tomatoes; Mr J. Provan. Collection of-vegetables: Mr James Wing. Collection of apples: Mr John Fra ter. Collection of pears; Mr S. Cameron. Crochet work, coarse cotton; Mrs Meehaelis. Cushion: Mrs J. Robertson. Juvenile Section.—The following prizes were awarded in the juvenile section: Collection of six vegetables: Miss Clarence Theipers. Map drawing: Murdoch Campbell, Small cakes: Jean Simpson. Mecanno model: Arthur Varney. Most points in section: Jean Simpson. PERSONAL. Mr A. Ashworth and Mr A. M’Kellar left Alexandra this week to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Fire Brigades at Whangarei, Mr M’Kellar as a delegate and Mr Ashworth to receive the gold star, which will be presented to him for having completed 25 years of service. Mr John Carlinc, who has been associated in partnership with his brother in a butchery business, in Alexandra for a number of years, was married to-day at Green Island to Miss Janet Kane. BOWLING. A rink skipped by Mr Paulin came from Clyde to-day, and endeavoured to win the Jolly Cup from the Alexandra holders, hut were defeated by a fair margin.
