CROMWELL NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, February 25. The short period of real summer weather broke on Sunday. After heavy wind, rain fell during the greater part of the day. Light showers fell round the hills early on Monday. The weather is now more settled.

With the dry spell the river fell to winter level, and consequently the Cromwell Development Company’s pumps were out of _ commission for some days. With the rain, the river rose to the four-feet mark at the town, but has fallen almost as quickly'. This would enable pumping to be resumed, but not for any length of time unless there is further rain. Considering that the weir is not yet sealed, the company has had a good run. SCHOOL REUNION. * At a committee meeting in connection with the recent successful school reunion, ayery satisfactory financial statement was presented. This showed a surplus from the function of £64—a most gratifying position. The disposal of this will be discussed later. A-souvenir booklet will in all probability be issued. It may be that steps will be taken to establish permanently the art gallery of old-time views and celebrities, which was one of the outstanding features of the function. BOWLING. Cromwell still leads in the Centre Shield competition. On Saturday five rinks from the club travelled to Bannockburn, and won the match by a fair margin. Of the five rinks, Cromwell were successful in four. The competition is now nearing completion. MINING. Favoured by a low level work has proceeded steadily in the Cornish Point Company’s mine at' the junction of the two rivers. The pumps are successfully coping with the water. Bottom has not yet been reached in the. incline tunnel, and the depth of the ground is a good sign. The greatest obstacle at present is that while putting down the incline the water has to be Dumped from temporary sumps. This difficulty will disappear once the bottom is reached, and a permanent sump can be made in the reef. The tunnel has been well constructed, and snpukl payable ground be struck, it wiL enable work to be expeditiously extended in any direction. Those who know the area are hopeful now that deep ground has been proved in the point. TRAFFIC FACILITIES.

The new concrete bridge over ibe Clutha River at Albertown, which will do away with the punts, now presents a finished appearance. The final spans are nearing completion, and, the erection of the handrailing and such' minor details is now being carried out. The main structure of the bridge right across is complete, and the finishing: work will not occupy much time.

OBITUARY. The daeth occurred at Cromwell on Friday of Mrs W. Spain, a comparatively young woman, aged 49 years. Deceased was at native of Gibbston, but had lived in this locality for some years. Her husband died just a year ago to the day. She had been ailing for some weeks, from a complaint which left little hopes of recovery. There ia a surviving family of six, some still young, to whom much sympathy is extended. THE HARVEST. Farmers are busy up the valley with the binders. Some excellent crops are to be seen, and the general are that the grain is well headed and yields quite satisfactory.
