(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPHIR, February 25, LAWN TENNIS.

The Blacks School lawn tennis- court was occupied all day on Saturday. In the forenoon, Blacks School played Chatto Creek School. The visitors showed superiority in combined play, and the home school in singles, the result being very close. The scores are as follow (Spottis names first): — Girls’ Doubles.—N. Moa Creek and Omakau-Poolburn played a one-day cricket match on the Omakau ground, the latter winning by 52 runs. For Omakau, the Ophir representative, M. Day, c and b, 4; extras,. 11. Total, 151. A. Finlayson took sis wickets for 38 runs. . SOCIAL SERVICE. Mr J. B Brugh, superintendent qf the Dunedin Presbyterian Social Service Association, paid his annual visit to the Lauder parish on Sunday, and preached in the churches at Becks, Chatto Creek, and Ophir. Mr Brugh gave a very interesting account of the service rendered by the church in connection with the care of 54 aged people in Ross Homes and 76 girls and boys in Nisbet Home and Glendining Home. He also sketched the plan to be carried out in building three cottages, each to contain eight boys and eight girls, so that they may be brought up in family groups. THE WEATHER. The barometer has been extremely unsteady for a week, with the following fluctuations, viz.:—Fall 34 points, rise 21, fall 34, rise 24, fall 37, further fall 26, and rise 62 points—all in seven days. The average shade temperature was nine degrees lower than during the preceding fortnight. Sis points of rain fell on Saturday and seven on Sunday. Yesterday was a cold day, with blustering westerly wind. It is cloudless and calm this morning, after heavy dew last night and 33.6 degrees on the grass.
