LAWRENCE NOTES.

(Feoji Oub Own Correspondent.), LAWRENCE, February 24. THE WEATHER. Ideal summer weather conditions have prevailed during practically the whole of the month. Some days have been excessively hot, but the weather has not been so dry as. to cause any material harm, though some portions of the district would benefit by a good rainfall. ASSESSMENT COURT. Next court day promises to be a busy one, as the Borough Council has received notice of 14 objections to its rating valuation for the coming year, the majority of the property owners maintaining that the increases were not justified under the present conditions. LAWRENCE ATHENAEUM. The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Lawrence Athenaeum was held last Friday night. Mr R. Gray presided. The secretary submitted the report and balance sheet, showing that the revenue from all sources amounted to £317 9s Id, and expenditure to £287. The number of subscribers was 95; 84 volumes were added to the library during the year. The committee placed on record a minute of appreciation of the long service rendered by the late Mr’ John Stenhouse, who was ‘ treasurer for 50 years. The chairman stated the position of the institute was quite satisfactory. The assets amounted to £396, and the debit balance to £1 19s lOd.

Mr R. Gray was re-elected president, and the following committee was elected for the ensuing year:—Messrs D. Finlayson, D. MTntosh, H. Marshall, W. G. M'Kinlay, R. C. Moore, J. Norrie R. A. Frisk, and R. S. Thompson. GENERAL.

The Milton Farmers’ Union has invited Messrs R. S. Thompson and Mr J. B. M'Kinlay to address the next meeting of the union on the administration and affairs of the Otago Electric Power Board.

A meeting of the Tuapeka - Horticultural Society was held on Monday night, the president (Mr T. H, Clark) being in the chair. It was decided to adhere to the autumn date, March 5. Mr G. A. Skene, of Dunedin, was nominated as the judge of the fruit, flowers, and vegetable sections. The industrial section was left in the hands of the Ladies’ Executive. The musical programme would be provided by Wood’s Orchestra. The show promises to he a good one in the fruit and vegetable sections, A fine display of cut flowers is also expected.
