A SMART CAPTURE.
ARMED MAN ARRESTED. BETRAYED BY ELECTRIC TORCH. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, February 25. A well-armed young man was smartly arrested at 11.55 last night in Broadway, Nfewmarkct, by Constable Hendren. The constable was patrolling his beat, and wlien near the entrance to the New* market Railway Station he saw the beanie of an electric torch being flashed on the doorway of Howie’s gramophone parlour, some distance down the street. He ran swiftly to within a few yards of the shop and then crept up quietly alongside the window. Constable Hendren took the man completely by surprise and sprang on him. The young man was immediately taken vo the Newmarket Police Station where he was searched and found to be in possession of a seven-chambered revolver, loaded in six chambers, two screw drivers, a file, a pair of pliers, and an electric torch. The nlan arrested was Robert John Bolton, aged 20, described on the charge sheet at the Police Court this mornitig as a labourer ahd a native of Australia Bolton is a sliorj, slightly built young man. He was charged with being found by night in possession of housebreaking instruments and another count charged him with carrying firearms not for any lawful or sufficient purpose. There was a further charge of having in his possession for longer than seven days an unregistered revolver. Bolton seemed to treat being in the dock rather lightly, for he smiled broadly as the charges were being read. The accused was remanded for a week. Bail was not allowed. It is believed further charges will be preferred against Bolton.
