BAND CONTEST.

SOLO COMPETITIONS. A GRADE FIRST TEST. WON BY PORT NICHOLSON. . The championship band contest was continued at the Town Hall yesterday, In the morning the E flat tenor horn solo was completed, and in the afternoon a decision was reached in the B flat baritone solo competition. The championship B flat cornet solo was also held in the afternoon, and the judge selected four competitors for recall. The evening was occupied with the first section of the A' Grade test selection. There was an excellent attendance in the evening, when the A Grade first, test selection was secured. by Port Nicholson, with .Wellington -Municipal Tramways second, and Woolston third. Kaikorai were placed fifth, and St. Hilda sixth RESULTS. The following are the results:— B FLAT TENOR HORN SOLO. First prize, gold medal; second prize, silver medal. Judge: Mr A. Schuack. W. Smith (St. Hilda), 90 points . . 1 H Parsonage (Woolston), 97 points . 2 Also competed: A. Chatterton (St. Hilda) 91, F. Turner (Woolston) 90, L, Ormand (Port Nicholson Silver) 90. G. Hunter (Dunedin City Tramways) 80, D. Spott (Kaikorai) 80, H. Jackson (Dunedin City Tramways) 79,-H. Wild (Port Nicholson Silver) 79. The judge’s comments on the placed performers were as follows:

W. Smith.—“ Refined opening; beautiful colourings; very chaste; tone'is pure; every note is Carefully played; most artistic; you have musical sense; bar 14 by far the best yet; cadenza good, but not up to your Other playing: recitative full of Character tone, big and good; andat.to con riioto, tempo good, all going well; allegro, long, note most artistic; pin mosso, glorious playing; cadenza gr*’at; a noble ending.” In announcing the -result Mr Schnack expressed the opinion that Smith put up a wonderful performance. The maximum number of points was 100. H. Parsonage.—“ Opening, beautiful tone; very fine right along; your colourings are splendid; and the tone is very refined; bar 44, good; cadenza played lovely, all details watched; recitative well defined iri every detail; andante, correct tempo, everything going first class; quite a pleasure to listen; lovely piu mosso, cadenza splendid; falling short of No. 13 (Smith) in high-class tone colouring.” B FLAT BARITONE SOLO—Grand Fantasia, “I Capuletti 11 (Bellini).

The.judge (Air A. Schnack) commented as follows on the playing of the placed competitors:— x W. Nelson.—“ Good opening, E sharp, going very nicely; cadenza very well played, low D flat; lento, good playing; cridenza played very nicely, best opening yet;' allegro, you have nice tone; cadenza very good indeed: allegretto, inclined to cross your accent slightly, otherwise good; moderate, good accent and getting all your work in; all played well; lento, you have a good conception of a dotted note; good playing very artistic; cadenza best yet; allegro, really fine ' playing; splendid finish; would have liked a little more colouring in places, blit a splendid pertotfnance.”

C. Smith.—“ Opening, good tone; cadenza very_ well played; lento, very good, I am getting all of your notes, intonation good; cadenza, very safe, you ar a playing well; allegro, iust a little softer would be better, but everything else is good; cadenza very good: allegretto, good playing, yotir tonguiiig ia rather pronounced, but everything is being played; moderato, some good work here, everything clean, just a little off in one place; lento, good work, would like a little better colour* ln K; you are very honest in your work: cadenza very good; allegro, execution very good, finish a wee bit rushed; a very good performance.”

In his comnietlt on G.. Wilson’s playing, the judge stated, that if his tone had been better be would have secured a place. At the conclusion ot the contest the judge will announco the winners of the B Grade, Tomorrow the A, Grade second test will be held. ihe A and B Grade quickstep contest will be decided at Carisbrook on Saturday afternoon. At the conclusion ot each contest a massed bands’ display will be held. Ah additional attraction will lie a display by the Bugle Band.
