PALMERSTON NOTES.

(From Oub Own Correspondent.) . PALMERSTON, February 21. A public meeting was held last night to discuss the proposed construction of baths for the town. The Mayor presided, and stated that the section offered by Mr R Cameron was not suitable, as the buildof a foundation would be expensive and the children would haye to croaa the railway line. The , Soldiers’ Memorial Committee had then been approached, and had offered its section adjoining the school under certain conditions. He had visited the- Education. Board, and 'the ,architect . had promised/to inspect this section. The board bad also promised that the Education Department would find £2OO. According to the Education Board report, this was later reduced to £l6O. The head teacher (Mr J Thomson) spoke of the necessity of teaching children to swim. The Shag River was not convenient for the purpose. To obtain the Government grant the baths musi be placed on school property. The suggested size was 100 feet by 334 ft. with a depth of from 3ft |Bin to 6ft 6in. ;Mr Thompson moved—“ That this meetmg heartily agrees that the baths be built.” This was seconded by Dr Howden and earned. / ; Mr Mann said that they should decide whether the baths were 'to be school or public baths. ' ' ’ _ The Mayor stated that the Education Department required the use of the baths ; for only ■ one and a-half hpurs daily for the children. The public would be allowed to use them at other hours. The department jwas agreeable to the baths being controlled by members of the School Committee, Borough Council, and County Council. , .Later in the evening it was mentioned that baths would be available for teaching the pupils of the surrounding schools. , Mr J, Gordon moved—“ That the baths be constructed on school property, and* that the public have the use of them in spare hours." The motion was seconded by Mir Mann and carried. . It was decided that the' baths be controlled by twee members of the School Committee, two members of the Borough Council, one member of the Waihemo County Council. It was stated that several citizens and settlers had offered to supply teams for excavating and supplying gravel. The earth excavated could be used to level up the school sections. ■, .The following Baths Construction Committee was appointed;—Messrs J.Thompson,' J. Gordon, Kerse, M‘lvor, Pittaway, Robson, .Swinton, Sawyer. Mann, Hopkins. Wills, W. MTCenney jun., R. Cameron, J Philip, D. Ross, Dr Howden, and Miss -M’Ritcme, ■ This committee met and decided 'to map out the district and make a diouse-to-honSe call for contributions. PALMERSTON HOSPITAL GUILD. .At a meeting of the guild it was decided to hold a garden fete early in April, as the funds were almost exhausted, and various needs of the guild were becoming pressing. Perhaps it is not generally known that the guild maintains a library for the use of the patients as well as providing numerous necessary comforts for them. Lieutenant Buckeridge arrived here on Thursday, He landed on Mr H. O’Neill’s property, and . has been kept busy taking passengers for trips. Great interest is being taken in the flights over the town.
