WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tlie monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council , was held yesterday at Waikouaiti, and ..was attended by Crs E Laley (chairman), P. Briscoe, G. Gilmore, H. Box, J. Preston, and C. M'Callum , CORRESPONDENCE. A communication was received from the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Waikouaiti, advising that the fate or interest to be charged on the county tund account from February 1, 1930, had been raised to 7 per cent, per annum.— Received. Messrs Lang and Paterson wrote re9nesting that repairs to a fence on Mrs Millar s property at Purakanui be carried out. —Received; the matter to be attended to immediately. The Palmerston Borough Council torwarded an account for maintenance of Ronaldsay street, Palmerston.—Received, the clerk was instructed to write to the

council, requesting a reply to representations made to it sojne time ago in connection with this matter, Ur R. S. J. Fitzgerald, Oamaru, forwarded a_ copy of a letter sent by him to the Marine Department regarding erosion which was taking place along the frontage of his property at Karitane, md requested' the council to support his acLon.—Cr Preston stated that he had met Dr Fitzgerald, and had inspected the affected spot, which was in a very bad condition.-—The letter was received, and the clerk was_ instructed to communicate with the Marine Department, supporting the claim of Dr Fitzgerald. Thcvsecretary of the Warrington School Committee wrote asking that the remainder of Church road, Warrington, .be metalled with screenings,—Received, the matter to be attended to at the council’s convenience. The Waihemo County Council wrote suggesting that there should be a stringent examination of all service cars using public roads.—Received. It was decided to reply stating that the matter Had been considered by the committee appointed by the conference of local bodies in Highway Districts Nos. 16 and 17, and requesting the Waihemo County Council to support this suggestions made in a circular issued by that committee. The Waihemo County Council wrote in regard to the payment of the cost of a belt-conveyor which it had. in conjunction with the Palmerston Borough Council, purchased from the Waikouaiti County Council.—The letter was received, and it was decided to institute proceedings against both the councils for the recovery of their proportion of the cost. ■ The district engineer. Public Works Department. Dunedin, wrote forwarding a schedule of the rates approved by the Highways Board for the hire of the county plant used in work on the main highway.—Received. the inspector to confer with the district engineer with a view to obtaining more information on the subject. . * ■ A letter, was received from the secretary of the committee appointed fay , representatives of local bodies in Main Highways Districts Nos. 16 and 17, forwarding a recommendation of his committee regarding the appointment of group traffic 'inspectors.—Received, the writer to be informed that the council was in favour of the suggestion of the committee. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1299 0s lOd were passed for payment. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector (Mr T. Lang) Submitted the following report regarding the work done in the various ridings during the month:—./ Hawkabury Riding.—The new metal on Stony Peak road is now being graded in and blinded, and some of the other roads in that locality will also be graded. New piles have been placed under three of the. Flag Swamp bridges, and one of the wing walls of the bridge at Dempster’s has been renewed.' There is a bad washout on the lower side of this bridge, and some willow planting is required to protect the road. Ten yards of rotten rock nave been spread on Quarry road, but 40 yards more are required. The metalling contract at Nenthorn had not been ’ commenced at the end of last week. Merton Riding.—-Culverts and ditches have .been, cleaned out, on Apes’s road, and it was proposed to grade this toad and Cortjer Bush road immediately with the horse grader. The metalling contract at Warrington was being carried out; 10 chains of. the lower end of Church road have been widened and metalled, and eight chains of Park street are now being metalled. Blueskin Riding.—Another six-inch pipe has been put in on Lower Harbour road, iand the retaining walls near Grassy Point had. been. repaired. Donald's Hill road had been ■ surfaced, and ditches and culverts ‘ cleaned out in Waitati township. About SO yards of gravel wer'e required for. the roads in this township.. Water tables had been cleaned out on the road through Purakanui township, and metal broken for the wheel tracks on the c l ay portion of the road. The new metal on the Waitati-Port Chalmers road required to be raked in and blinded. The work could be done by the grader, and other roads in this district could also be graded. North-East Valley Riding.—A nine-inch pipe culvert had been put in near the slip bn Hall road, and the metal on Reservoir road had been blinded, ' The Dunedin-Christchurch highway had been graded during the month, and potholes bad been-filled with ' metal' at Mertoh Flat. This portion of- the road required about 100 yards of metal. On the Evansdale-Merton (via Seacliff) highway nearly 600 yards of metal had been spread between Eyansdale and DeCU Creak. tllG 'road having been graded'and some parts .scarified before metalling. 'A large culvert near Seacliff, the lower end. of which i was damaged by the floods, a few 'months ago, was being extended by 10 feet and rebuilt in concrete. On the DunedinWaitati (via Leith Valley) road the bed of the erbek below Burns’s Creek bridge bad been planted with willows and filled with trees to prevent erosion. The road through the slip was now fairly good, and a commencement would be made in pitching the banks of the creek under the' bridge. . The report was approved, '
