MATCH AGAINST NELSON.

(Per Unked Pbess Association.) NELSON, December 20.

Gilligan sent Nelson in to bat on a good wicket to-day in the match between Nelson ami the M.C.G. team. Earle, Legge, and Bowlcy are not playing. The local team made a poor start, losing two wickets for 13 runs. However, Neales and Newman became associated in a partnership for the third wicket, which realised 65 runs. Newman, who made pretty shots off Barrett to the off boundary, was missed early in his innings in the slips off Nicholls, by whom the batsman was troubled. Neale batted faultlessly till he had 30 up. He was twice missed in the last over before lunch when wo wickets were down for TO. Six bowlers were tried before lunch.

On resuming, Duleepsinhji, who was sending down twisty ones, had Neale caught on the leg side. He batted 90 minutes. In the next over Allom skittled Newman. Four for 75. Allom then had three wickets for 0 runs off eight overs.

Eden and Jeukins came to light with a bright partnership of 58 for the fifth wicket, Duleepsinhji proving expensive. In one over Eden hit two fours, a six, nother four off consecutive balls from’ the Indian, making 19 off the over. Eden made 30 in 30 minutes,. One hundred runs were made in 110 minutes. Frequent boiling changes were made without effect until Nichols took his first wicket, Conifoi;d brilliantly catching Jenkins behind the stumps. Soon after 3 o’clock rani set in, and stumps were drawn, Nelson having five wickets down for 131. The wicket was covered. Scores:—

Sydney match, an official of the department said that the appeal, if received; will be treated like any other which a taxpayer is entitled to make, but the department has no power of discrimination. Only the Government can make a remission as an act of grace.
