OBITUARY.
MR W. a, HAWSON
Mr Walter B. Hawson, who died at his residence, at Palmerston on Thursday, was a much-respected resident of the dtv He had held several important positions as manager of the Bank of New Zealand in various parts of Otago, and he formed a link with the old goldmining days. His longest term of office was that of manager at Ophir, from 1889 to 1007. It was during this period—in ISOo that the Colonial Bank was amalgamated with the Bank of New Zealand. Prior to this he had many experiences in the mining localiti-.s which be visited to buy gold 'from the miners. Those were days of long hours and tedious travelling, and many anecdotes he founded on his travels. After officiating -at Ophir Mr Hawson was transferred to Queenstown, leaving there in 1913 to manage the bank at Palmerston South. After 12 years’ service in this place ho was unfortunately compelled to give up work on account of failing eyesight, and since then he had lived in retirement. He was of a kind and sympathetic nature, amt h" will be deeply mourned by a wide circle of friends.
