MILTON NOTES.

• (From Our Own Correspondent.) 1 MILTON, May 6. ODDFELLOWS. There was a large gathering of South Otago Oddfellows at Lawrence on Saturday evening, when the annual initiation competition was held. Teams were entered by the following lodges:—Loyal Victoria (Milton ladies). Loyal Queen of Otago (Kaitangata ladies),' Loyal AlexandraPort MoTyneux), Loyal Milton, Loyal Tuapefca Pioneers,, and Loyal Roxburgh. In addition to the competing teams, each lodge had a quota of supporters. _ Some excellent renderings of the initiation ritual were given, and were favourably commented on by the judges, P.P.G.M.’e Bros. 0. H. Russell and W, Hutton, who were assisted by P.G.MI Bro. P. H. Young and P.P.G.M. Bro. W. J. Johnston. The trophy was awarded to Loyal Queen of Otago team, which came first by the narrow margin of ,half a point from Loyal Alexandra. The points awarded were as follows;—Loyal Queen of Otago, 194 i; Loyal Alexandra, 194; Loyal Milton, 180; Loyal Victoria, 159; Loyal Tuapeka Pioneers, 158 i; Loyal Roxburgh, 150. The personnel of the victorious team was:—N.G., Sister J. Smith; supporters. Sisters Hadler and E. Smith; V.G., Sister 0. Wilson; supporters, Sisters J. Finch and M. Leiehmau; Grand Mistress, Sister N. Grimshaw; supporters. Sisters P. M'Kinlay and C. Kaye; Warden, Sister D. Kaye; Guardian, Sister E. Bowmar; Conductor, Sister J. Robertson; candidate, Sister M, Kennedy. The winners were heartily congraulated on again winning the shield, which was presented by P.G.M. Bro. P, H. Young. Thanks were accorded to the Dunedin judges, and the visiting Oddfellows were afterwards entertained at .a social evening by the members of Tuapeka Pioneers Lodge. ROYAL HEALTH SOCIETY. A canvass in aid of the funds of the Milton branch of the Royal Health Society has been completed, and has resulted in the ■ gratifying sum of £SO 9s 7d being raised. FOOTBALL ACCIDENTS. Two accidents occurred in football matches played at Milton on Saturday afternoon. A youth named Stanley Porter, playing for Clufha 111, sustained a fractured leg during a scramble near Clutha’s line. He was taken to the local hospital, and later conveyed by train to the Balclutha Hospital, where he is progressing satisfactorily. One of the_ Star (Stirling) team’s forwards had hie nose broken through col-, liding heavily ; with a Toko player. AGRICULTURAL .CLUB. The potato • experimental plots grown by the 16 competitors of the Toko High School Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Chib were dug last week under the supervision of members of the local committee. The tubers have been forwarded to the Agricultural Department officers at Dunedin for grading and allocation of prizes. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. Mr John Taylor has withdrawn his nomination for the extraordinary vacancies on the Milton Borough Council. The withdrawal has obviated the necessity for a contest, and the other two candidates, Messrs James Carruthers and Richard C. Marryatt, have been declared elected. The installation of the newly-elected Mayor and councillors will take place on-Wed-nesday evening. CHURCH BAZAAR. The annual bazaar organised by the Milton Methodist Church Ladies’ Guild, was held in the Coronation Hall on Friday afternoon and evening, and proved highly successful. The gross receipts totalled £IOO, as compared with £145 last year, and the general average for recent years of £175. HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION. For the triangular contest on Wednesday for representation of • the combined counties of Bruce, Clutha. Tuapeka, and Maniototo on the Ota—' Harbour Board, the returning offic. 'Mr L. W. Potter), has made arrangements for no fewer than 110 polling booths over the scattered area. Of these. 32 booths are situate in Bruce County, 33 in Clutha, 27 in Tuapeka. and 18 in Maniototo County, FOOTBALL. ; The Toko Football Club’s teams engaged in South Otago banner competitions both showed improved form as contrasted with t. previous Saturday, and each gained victories on the local ground by substantial margins. The chib’s Senior Grade team had a bye on Saturday, Toko 111 proved superior to Clutha 111, whom they defeated by 22 points to 6. For the winners tries were scored by O’Shaughnessy, Elliott, Ashton, Steward

Hansen (2), and a penalty goal was kicked by Ashton. Two of tire tries were converted. For the losers tries were scored by Gold and Stevens, neither being converted. For the match between Toko II and Star, (Stirling! the visiting team arrived two players snort, and substitutes were provided by players from Clutha ill team. The game was very evenly contested, but the Toko players seized most of the opportunities afforded, and won by 23 points to 8. For Toko tries were scored by Woodhead (2), Jones, Sheehy, Carruthers (2), and W. Heads kicked a penalty goal.. In the concluding stages of the second spell Evaney scored a wellmerited try for Star, which was converted by Davey, who also kicked a penalty goal.
