SOUTH OTAGO.

BAICLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, May 5. FOOTBALL. Glorious weather prevailed on Saturuay. ond the attendance of the public at the Show Ground, while good, was not so large as might have been expected from tlie matches provided by-the sub-union—-namely, the first meeting for the season those old rivals Crescent (Kaitangata) and Clutha seniors. South Otago High School and Crescent 111 provided a “curtain-raiser” in the shape of a well-fought-out contest, ending m favour of Crescent by 14 points to 11 points. In the first . spell Gorraaek scored tor the School, anfiPryde secured two t1'169 for Crescent, one of which he converted. In the second spell Gormack, after a fine run, secured a spectacular try and Gilmour and Hislop added tries for Crescent. Shortly before time, Hurring scored for School and converted his own try, the game ending;—Crescent 14 points, School 11 points. Mr James M'Namara was referee. Clutha I and Crescent I then lined out for the banner fixture. The play for the greater part,of the first spell was not of a high standard, although it was apparent that the teams were evenly matched. The advantage of the heaviest ‘forwards lay with Clutha, but this was equalised by the skill of the Crescent backs in fielding the ball and kicking. Just on half time Tinsley Wilson, who was playing centre three-quarter for Clutha, scored a try, so that the spell ended with Clutha three points up.. The second spell had not progressed far before it was seen that both sides were making the game more "willing,” but_ although there were several “ near things,” neither side could score until about halfway through the spell. M. Carlin, Crescent's half-back, - retired with a bruised shoulder. Muir, Clutha’s half, passed to Graham (five-eighths), and the ex-Pirate player streaked through the opposition to score in a good position. He took the kick and placed a nice goal. Clutha 8 points, Crescent nil. There was no further score. For the winners, D. M'Feeters (full-back), Graham, Harraway, Elliott, and Tinsley Wilson among the backs, and Ross, Micbie, MTntosh (forwards) were prominent. ’ “ Rangi ” Stewart, who is this season playing for Clutha, was not at his best as wing-for-ward, and Hansen, on the opposing wing, was more than his match. It was. evident that "Rangi” was not at,the top of his form. For Crescent, Vickers, (fullback) played a first-class game, and Black, Townley, and Carolin were also conspicuous behind the scrum. Rutherford, Hansen, Forester, and Hughes were a formidable quartet in the forwards. Mr S. V. White was referee in a game that was fought in the best of spirits. Other fixtures in South Otago resulted: —Senior; Owaka 8 v. Clinton 3. Second Grade: Waitahuna 5 v. Union 3; Romahapa 16 v, Clutha nil; Clutha Valley 14 v. Clinton 3. ' At the weekly meeting of the Emer§ency Committee of the South Otago üb-union, the following clearances were approved::—J. Smith, Union to Toko; Sneehey, Ngapara to Toko; L. Bowen, Invercargill to Crescent; A. Ward, Winton to Crescent; G. Walker, Alexandra to Owaka; J. Moore, Crescent to Owaka; G. S. Gillespie, Waimate to Clutha Valley. It was decided to issue players' passes the same as last year, but to insist that these be produced at the gates.
