POPPY DAY RETURNS.

further returns from the country in connection with the Poppy Day appeal are reported by the secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr Neil H. Colquhouu) as follows:—Totara (Mr R. Moir and _ school children), £4; Ngapara (Mr F, Kennedy and school children), £2 10s; Livingstone (Mr J. L. Gray and school children), £1; Papakaio (Mr W. A. Bond and school children), £3, Hilderthorpe (Mr A. Fraser and school children), £-; Enfield (Mr J. Joiner), £3 17s; Duntroon (Mr S. M. Barclay and school children), £3 13s. MEN’S HOCKEY. Two men’s hockey matches were played at Moeraki on Saturday. The ground was in perfect order. . WATEA v. MAHENO. From the bully Watea attacked, keeping MahenO hemmed iu their circle practically throughout the first spell, but erratic shooting by the Watea forwards could not penetrate the Maheuo defence At last, from a smart piece of crosspaasing, L. Reynolds secured and netted with a fine goal. The second spell started with a hot attack by the Watea forwards, Those backs were giving them plenty of ball, but hard hitting was too much in evidence, and chances of scoring were missed time and again. Arrangements in connection with the forthcoming jubilee reunion and social were discussed and advanced a stage. Mr G. R. Hunter was elected an honorary member of the brigade. It was decided to present the service honours at the jubilee social. NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last evening, Mr G. B. Stevenson presiding. . Mr J. Pringle acknowledged with thanks the union's message of sympathy. The borough engineer advised that Takaro Park would be available for football practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. St. Kevin’s College advised that the Third and Fourth -Grade teams would not be able to play competition games on May 11, 18, and 25 on account of school holidays. Transfers wore granted to P. Andrews and- J. Burn from Athletic juniors to Third Grade. The Excelsior Club advised the withdrawal of the Fourth Grade team from ,the competition. Mr W. Atkinson was appointed timekeeper. The draw for Saturday is as follows: Old Boys v. Excelsior, Oval, 2.45 p.m. (Mr R. Hinkley); Athletic v. Maheno, at Maheno, 2.45 p.m. (Mr J. Palmer). The conditions were ideal for flying for the pigeon race from Ashburton on Saturday, there being a following wind and a clear sky. The event resulted as follows; Webb Bros’. Night March, 1487.9 yards; Mr D. Sparkes’s In the Shade, 1443.9 yards; Mr A. H. Ruddick's Truant, 1441.7 yards; Mr J. Meikle’e Tip Top, 1414.9 yards. The wintung time was Xhr 47min 32sec. Twelve lofts competed, and the time is a record for young bird racing this year. ** OAMARU NORTH SCHOOL. ' A meeting of the committee and the Expupils Association of the North School was held last evening, Mr J. Mitchell presiding over a large attendance. A discussion took place as to the beat means of raising funds for the committee’s share of the cost of installing a heating system for the old school. The total cost is estimated at £325, of which the committee has to contribute £llO. It was decided to hold a jubilee sale for the purpose, the date being fixed for June 15. It was decided to. apply to the Education Board for a grant towards tile cost of renewing portions of the existing fences and improvements to the asphalt playgrounds, and also for the usual subsidy for top-dressing, Messrs J. Mitchell and W. Gillies were reappointed delegates to the dental clinic. It was decided to call a meeting of householders to make arrangements for the jubilee sale. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE. A meeting of the Oamaru brigade and nursing division of the St. John Ambulance was held last evening. Archdeacon Russell presiding. It was decided to hold the annual social on May 20. The chairman will arrange for speakers, Mrs Forrester and Mr J. M. Brownlie for the musical programme, and Miss Sumpter and members of the nursing division, for the supper. The offer of Dr Orbell to lecture the 1929 class was accepted. It was decided not to hold the railway classes this year on account of there being insufficient support.
