IFrom Oub Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, April 24. CROQUET CLUB. The closing of the season and the 1 annual meeting were held yesterday. As the president was away on holiday Mrs Knox took the chair, and after tea pre sented the trophies. The championship was won by Mrs R. Lattimore v runuer-np, Mrs W. Stewart), and the B Grade Championship by Mrs R. R. Grigor (Mrs Clinch’s prize),, with Mrs J. B. Hislop (runner-up). Mesdames W. S. Thomson' and G. Reid won the silver buttons-for the handicap doubles. • A> prize givenby Mr B. Lattimore for the 0 Grade competition was won by Mrs W. Roy. A new committee was elected as follows:--President. Mrs A. R. Allan; secretary. Miss M. Stewart; vice-president, --Miss Dallas; captain, Miss M. Dallas; committee —Mesdames Lothian, Shepard, Waite, and Reid. SUGGESTED CLOSER SETTLEMENT. Representations having been made to the Minister of Lands (Mr G. W. Forbes) as to the desirability of acquir ing portion of the Otanomomo estate, near Balclutha, for cutting into small farm areas, advice has now been received from the Minister that be proposes to have the whole matter considered after the appointment of the local Land Purchase Board, It is understood that the .owners of the property (Messrs Telford Bros.) are not prepared to sell. The Minister expresses regret at being unable, to comply with a request to make a personal inspection of the property, and at the same time view the Otanomomo State settlement (where the settlers have done remarkably well on small areas of land),' but he finds that it will be impossible for him to do so before the session.
