OBITUARY
MR AVERY HOPWOOD. DROWNED NEAR NICE. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, July 2, The death is announced of Mr Avery Hopwood, playwright. He was drowned while bathing at Juan les Pins, near Nice.—Australian Press Association— United Service. Mr Avery Hopwood was born at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1882, and was educated at the University of Michigan. In 1905 he went to New York as special correspondent for the Cleveland Leader. His first play, “ Clothes,” was written in conjunction with Channing Pollock, and was produced at the Manhattan Theatre in September, 1906. Since that day he has written some 26 plays, including “ The Bat ” ( with Mary Rinehart Roberts), “Fair and Warmer,” “The Gold Diggers,” “ Seven Days,” and “ Gertie’s Garter.”
MRS ELIZABETH FINDLAY. A well-known old identity in the person of Mrs EHizabeth Findlay passed away at her residence in Lees street on Monday. Mrs Findlay, who was the widow of Mr Charles Findlay, of Romney Marsh Farm, North Taieri, arrived in Dunedin by the Philip Lain c when she was only one year old, her parents being Mr and Mrs John Barr. After the death of he r husband, nearly 50 years ago Mrs Findlay managed the farm hersel/, but 20 years ago she came to Lees street, remaining there until her death. 'She is survived bv a daughter (Miss Elizabeth Findlay), who was her mother's constant companion. A stepson is Mr John Findlav, of Long Beach. Canterbury, who attained the rank of colonel during the Great War. Mrs Findlay was> a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church, and of the Otago Early Settlers' Association. MR DUNCAN ROSS. The death occurred on Monday of Mr Duncan Ross, of Littlebourne road. Mr Ross, who was a native of Pluscarden, arrived in Otago in 1861 by the ship Robert Henderson, and spent most _of his life farming in the Glenore district. In spite of the fact that he was 90 years of age at the time of his death, Mr Ross, until a few months ago. walked from his home to the Maori Hill Presbyterian Church every Sunday morning.
