EASTERN DISTRICTS’ SUB-UNION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, July 3. On Saturday a Dunback team travelled to Waikouaiti, and after a hard-fought game Dunback won by three points (a trj scored by Simpson) to nil. The Palmerston team travelled to Shag Point, and suffered defeat by 17 points to nil. The second round of fixtures was concluded on Saturday, and the Dunback team remains unbeaten, and unless the other teams in the competition improve and reverse matters in the third round, the banner will return to Dunback. The following is the positions of the teams at the conclusion of the second round:— Points. Clip. P. W. L. D. For Ag. Pts.

The Shag Point-Seacliff match was not played on account of bad weather. It will be played later. On July 7 a trial match, Possibles v. Probables, will be played at Palmerston. VINCENT SUB-ASSOCIATION. (From Oue Own Correspondent-) OPHIR, July 3. On Saturday last the Matakanui A team journeyed nearly 80 miles to Pembroke to play a return match against Wanaka. The ground was in good order though somewhat bumpy, and the game was a more even one than the scores (Matakanui 17, Wanaka 3) would indicate, for Wanaka should have scored several times, but failed in the final effort. The first half was fairly even, ending in five points to nil. Shortly after the opening of the second spell one of the Wanaka men suffered a broken rib, and had to go off. Four more tries (one converted) were obtained by the winners, and one by Wanaka. Those who scored for Matakanui were A. Alexander (2), Glassford, Walker, and P. Moran (one each). T. Clouston converted two. Mr Cahill was referee. The result of this match has decided the season’s A Grade competition in favour of the local team, which has scored 172 against 6 in the seven matches played. Only the return game with Alexandra remains to be played, and in the first round Matakanui scored 38 points to nil. The Matakanui B Grade team played on the home ground at Omakau against Cromw-ell B, losing by 5 points to 11. The five points were scored in the first spell by a Cromwell player rolling over the ball in attempting to force, when Alexander, following, quickly touched down, and R. O’Connor goaled. Cromwell’s score was three tries (by E. Schieb, Hayes, and J. Smith), one f which was converted. The good combination of the visitrs—fine dribbling rushes by the frwards and clever handling by the backs—kept the ball in Matakanui’s ground more than three-quarters of the time, and the home side showed a great lack of combined play. Mr J. Haig was referee.
