CENTRAL OTAGO.

OPHIR NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPHIR, July 3. THE WEATHER. After the cloudiness which prevailed during the greater part of the month of June, the return to sunny days and clear frosty nights, which have been experienced during the last two days is very acceptable and enjoyable. The solar thermometer went up to over 80 degrees in the sun on Sunday afternoon, so that for an hour or two one might have imagined that spring was coming early. But the hoar frost has been very keen on these two mornings—lo. 6 degrees and 15.9 degrees on the grass. Ophir escaped most of the snow that fell in other parts of this valley during the latter half of June — the total fall here measuring slightly over half an inch. GUN CLUB. The local Gun Club, consisting of members from Omakau, Lauder, and Ophir, took part in a Central Otago Combined Gun Club shoot at Omakau on Friday, June 22. The combination represents also the other gun clubs of Alexandra, Moa Creek, and Poolburn, which were represented on that day, when there was over a score of competitors. All three first prizes fell to Omakau and Ophir. The list is as follows: A Grade.—C. Drake 115 birds) 1, A. Brown and S. Leask (14) 2, W. Alexander, A. Patterson, F. Jones, W. White (13) 3. B Grade. —W. Drake I, A. Patterson 2 Sweepstake (first miss out). —S. Leask 1, W. Alexander 2. A combined meeting was held on June 28, when a programme was drawn up for the season’s matches. The first competition of this series is to take place at Ophir on July 11, when a large gathering is anticipated. SOCIAL EVENING. On Saturday evening in the Ophir Peace Memorial Hall a welcome home social, in the form of a “ gift evening,” was tendered to Mr and Mrs Ernest Good-

man, who were recently married in Dunedin, and who returned to Ophir 10 days ago. The popularity of the young couple was shown by the large number of friends who came to welcome them back, and by the many presents that were given.
