GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present—the Mayor (Mr W. T. Kaler), Crs H. Christie, G. Orange, H. Connor, A. Logie, J. G. Lindsay, and P. O. Smellie. Accounts amounting to £325 8s 7d were passed for payment. The balance of the amount owing by the council—£7l7 Os 4d —on the reconstruction of the main highway was passed for payment. r A letter was received from the Dunedin Fire Board in regard to fire protection . in the borough.—lt was decided that a deputation comprising the Mayor and Crs P. O. Smellie and Christie should wait on the Fire Board to discuss the question. The Finance Committee recommended that the council should take out an insurance policy to indemnify it up to £IOOO against any claim which might be made against it in the event of an explosion taking place at petrol pumps, and that owners of petrol pumps should pay the premium on the policy.—The matter was referred back to the committee for further consideration. The New Zealand Refrigerating Company was granted a slaughter house license. A. E. Diehl wrote regarding the present state of James street. —It was der eidsd that the street be completed Virth ashes. D. K. Taylor wrote in regard to Reid street, and it was resolved that this street would also be completed in ashes. A communication was received from St. Mark's Church regarding Shand street, and T. D. Webster wrote concerning the condition of Mary street. —The engineer was instructed to attend to both streets. In response to a communication from the Otago Expansion League, it was resolved to inform the league that Brown’s Hill and the lookout portion of the main highway would be tar-sealed, and that the bridge on the Brighton road highway would be repaired out of the council's petrol tax allocation. It was decided to install street lamps at the corner of Exemouth and Alexander streets at a cost of £7 10s; at Lookout Point, at a cost of £11; and opposite Edgar’s on the Brighton road, at a cost of £l6 10s. A deputation consisting of the Mayor and Crs P. O. Smellie and W. T. Smellie was. formed to -wait upon the traffic manager in regard to the improvement of matters in connection with suburban railway traffic. Messrs John Duthie and Co.s (Wellington) tender for the supply of Material for the extension of the water supply in Abbotsford, amounting to £157 9s 2d, was accepted. Seven residents forwarded a petition calling the council’s attention to the condition of Victoria place, an undedicated street. —It was decided to declare that portion of Victoria place which the residents referred to a public road so as. to permit maintenance work to be effected. Attention was drawn by Cr Connor to the dangerous condition of the road leading from the main road past the golf links into Caversham. Through the dosing of the Lookout Point road this road was very largely used.—The clerk was_ instructed to communicate with the Taieri County Council asking it to put the road in order.
