OBITUARY. The news of the sudden death in Dunedin of Mr E. Stewart Mills was received . ith sincere regret by his numerous friends in Oamaru. He had been in poor health for some time, and had just sold his jewellery business in this town, with the object of securing a change of climate and surroundings. He intended proceeding to the West Coast, via Dunedin, and loft Oamaru only -a few days ago. The deceased waj formerly a promiuei. business man of Waimate, where he took a keen interest in sporting matters, and was for a time president of the Waimate Racing Club. Since coming to Oamaru two or three years ago he ha' also associated himself ;n various wavs with sport, and presented the Mills Shield to the North Otago Bowling Centre. The death occurred at his residence in Lune street, Oamaru, on Sunday night of Mr Joseph Wansbone, who had been a resident of this town for a good many years. The deceased, who was 78 years of age, formerly resided at Herbert. He was for some years greenkeeper of the Phcenix Bowling Club’s green, and at the time of his death was a life member of the Awamoa Bowling Club. He leaves a family of four sons, all of whom reside in the North Island, and one daughter (Mrs Tait, of Trent street, Oamaru). COUNTRY FOOTBALL. THE BOROUGH BY-ELECTION. The election of a councillor to till the vacancy caused by the death of Mr Robert Mahan takes place to-day. Mr W. H. Frith, who is one of the candidates, has been Mayor of the town, and a councillor for many' years. He unsuccessfully contested the mayoralty at the last election. ' Mr H. Abbot is a builder, who was unsuccessful-at the last cou ,cil election. but polled remarkably well. Mr Neil H. Colquhoun is an accountant, and secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Two rare visitors patronised the Oamaru foreshore on Sunday, in the foini of a couple of penguins. The death occurred at Kurow at an early hour yesterday morning of Mr James Barclay, one of the best-known and most highly respected residents of the Kurow district in his sixty-sixth year. The late Mr Barclay was a son of Mr John Barclay, one of the earliest residents of Oamaru. He received his early education in the Oamaru GrammarSchool. When he left school he was employed for a period in the grocery establishment of the late Mr James Familton. He afterwards joined the staff of the Colonial Bank and later went to Hakataramea, where he and his brothers bought out the business of the late Mr John Orr. They subsequently established a business in Kurow, which was the most successful of its kind in the district. The late Mr Barclay, who was a justice of the peace, took an active interest in the affairs of Kurow, and was a man of the strictest integrity. _ He was a member of the Kurow Masonic Lodge, and an active worker on the local Beautifying Society. He was married to a daughter of the late Mr Wilson, of Oamaru, and his family has the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION. The -nteekly meeting of the Management Committee of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last evening, Mr R. Young presiding over an attendance of 14 members. The following -transfers were granted;—Old Boys’ Club, M. Paterson and I. Petrie from Junior to Third Grade; Maheno Club, J. Sim, from senior to junior. Mr Ned Parata wrote stating that the Southern Maori team could pencil in September 29 for a return match, if that date would suit. The communication was held over for future consideration. The Eastern Districts Sub-union wrote in reference to the playing of a senior representative match at Palmerston. It was decided that a team be sent to Palmerston, but that the arrangement be left over for a future date.

Accounts amounting to £33 19s 7d were passed for payment. The secretary reported that the gate takings on Saturday last amounted to £26 7s. against £l7 for the same day last year. The receipts so far this season amounted to £177 8s Bd, against £162 9s lid for the same period last year. Mr J, Palmer complained that two junior clubs had played in practically the same colours on Saturday last. This had proved a source of trouble to the referee, and he stated that the referees would not stand for a continuance of this kind of thing.—Some discussion took place upon the subject. It was decided that the High School be written to asking that in future it should not play in the same colours as the Old Boys. On the motion of Mr Mollison, it was decided that the question of conflicting colours be gone into at the end of the season.

The chairman mentioned the question of a citizen who was in distress, and said it had been suggested to him that a portion of next Saturday's Kate be allocated to his assistance. —On the motion of Mr Mollison, it was decided that 20 per cent, of the gate be allocated to the fund. Mr Palmer reported upon the questions discussed at the conference of referees at Waimate. He stated that it had been decided that the players should stand flat-footed in the scrums.—-Several members commented upon this decision, some stating that the rules in Otago and other districts were different. —Eventually _ it was decided that it be a recommendation to the referees that the present rule be adhered to until the end of the season. The senior draw for next Saturday was arranged as follows: — Malieno v. Athletic. Oval. Old Boys v. Excelsior, No. 2 ground. SERVICES REWARDED. At the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Fire Brigade last night a cheque for £ls 15s was received .from the manager of Messrs John Bulleid, Ltd., in recognition of the services of the brigade at the recent fire. The contribution was received with thanks.

OAMARU FIRE BRIGADE. The annual meeting of members of the Oamaru Fire Brigade was held last evening in the fire station. There was a large attendance, and the chair was occupied by Superintendent W. Couper. The report and balance sheet for the past year was read. The balance sheet showed receipts amounting to £320 14s lid, and expenditure £235 2s 3d. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, congratulated members upon the improved financial position. He stated that tRe fires had been more numerous than in the previous year. In one case outside t’i2, borough the brigade had been compelled to stand by on account of there being no water. Superintendent Couper expressed thanks to Mr Beanlands for his services to the ambulance class, and ventured the hope that members would take full advantage of this class. He thanked the honorary surgeons, the Social Committee, and all who had assisted in making the year successful. He stated that the billiard table had cost over £IOO, and the receipts during the past two years had been £3B 14s. He expressed the hope that the contributions towards the billiard table would be increased, and that an effort would be made to swell the roll of the honorary members. Deputy-superintendent T. Herron seconded the motion for the adoption ’f the report, which was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Treasurer, Superintendent W. Couper; secretary. Foreman R. J.
