BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, July 1. POULTRY CHALLENGE SHIELD. The Victory Challenge Shield at, the Clutha Poultry Show was won by Mr W. Keen (Balclutha), with 83 points. Guessing Competitions.—The correct dressed weight of the sheep was 791 b. ami this was guessed by Betty Morgan, J. M. Moffat, \V. Keen, and D. Findlater, who divided the prize. The weight of three White Wyandottes (presented by Mr Keen) was 211 b. Four guessed the correct weight, and in th'c draw Mr C. Stevenson won. The judging competition was won by Mr J. H. Guest, with 68 points. FREEZING WORKS CLOSE. AFTER SUCCESSFUL SEASON. BALCLUTHA, July :.'. The South Otago Freezing Company's season closed this forenoon, when the butchers finished up. It was intended to close on Friday, but stock coming in at the last minute caused a delay A total of 91,000 sheep and lambs were put througn, compared with 80,000 last season, an increase of 11,000. Lambs generally were not up to the high standard of quality of last season, stated the manager (Mr R. A. Brewer) to the representative of the Otago Daily Times. THE WEATHER. Friday's snowfall disappeared with the advent of rain in the evening. Newlyploughed land, farmers says, will benefit greatly by the fall.
