A MAYORAL COMPLIMENT.
GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S SPEECHES A GRACEFUL ACKNOWLEDGMENT. (Special to Dailt Times.) AUCKLAND, June 4. Introducing the Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) and Lady Alice Fergnsson to the King’s Empire Veterans at the Town Hall to-day, the Mayor (Mr G. Baildon) expressed pleasure at the manner in which their Excellencies had interested themselves in community affairs since their arrival in New Zealand. “They have enshrined themselves in the hearts of everyone in the Dominion by their courtesy and their tact,” he said. No one could have shown such versatility in the discharge of his many duties as Sir Charles Fergusson, whose speeches, whether given before ..meetings of business men or gatherings of Girl Guides, were marked by a thorough knowledge of his subject. Both he and Lady Alice Had taken a keen interest in nil things pertaining to the city, her F-"Pency being particularly concerned various women's movements. “ It was kind of you to compliment me on my speeches,” said Sir Charles Fergnsson in reply, “ but I think it probable that I shall go down to posterity—to paraphrase an old joke of W. S. Gilbert . as the Governor-General who said nothing in particular, but said it very well.”—(Laughter.) “What we are doing is a labour of love,” his Excellency added, “ and we would do 10 times what we arc doing in order to show* how much we appreciate the kindness which from the moment of our arrival has been extended to us by every section of the people. We shall never forget to show bur gratitude and pay the debt we owe to New Zealand.”
