INTOXICATED IN CAR.
TAXI DRIVER’S LICENSE SUSPENDED. (Special to Daii* - Times.) AUCKLAND, June 4. William Malcolm, aged 27, a taxidriver, had fine gins, but no lunch or dinner on Saturday, and as a result he was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of his car in Symonds street. He pleaded guilty to the charge at the Police Court this morning. Sub-inspector M’Carthy stated that the taxi driven by Malcolm collided with a tramway centre pole at 6.10 p.m. Malcolm was quite able to walk after getting out of his car, although he was under the influence of liquor. “He says that on Saturday he had five gins, but di(i hot have anything to eat all day long. Of course, gin would quickly take effect on an empty stomach,” added Sergeant M'Carthy.' “ I think five gins would stir up a full stomach,” said Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. “ We cannot have men who are under the influence of liquor driving cars, particulargly taxi drivers,” said the Magistrate. “ Such men should be kept off the roads.’’ Malcolm was fined £lO, and his driver’s license was cancelled for six months.
