SOUTH OTAGO CRICKET.

CHALLENGE CUP MATCH,

MILTON, January 30

Keen interest was manifested in South Otago and Tuapeka cricketing circles on Saturday in the challenge match for the Crossby-Morris Silver Cup. This handsome trophy was presented several years ago to encourage a spirit of friendly rivalry amongst the country sub-unions. In the initial contest the cup was won by West Otago, but the following year South Otago proved victrious. and has since retained possession of the trophy, successfully resisting challenges by North Otago and Central Otago Sub-unions, and finally by the Tuapeka Sub-union. The match was played on the Milton Cltib s grounds on Saturday, and attracted a larcre number of spectators. • Tuapeka batted first, and were dismissed for the moderate score of 98 runs, ot which number Stuart (29), Rush (16), Caff ell (14), and Waldren (10, not out! contributed the double-figure scores. hor South Otago Gale took five wickets for 20 runs, Noble three for 27, and Bowie one for three. South Otago, in the first innings, compiled 198 runs for seven wickets (declared), Gale making the excellent score of 104 (retired). Other- good scores were Wilson (31), Noble (20); Wisely (13), and Hepburn (10). The best bowling average was secured by Eckhoff, who took four wickets for 62 runs. Tuapeka’s second innings yielded a total of 120, to which Rush contributed 30. Tillev 21, Rosanoski 12. Stuart 12, and Waldren 10. Alloo took six wickets for 31 runs, and Bowie secured two for 12. Requiring 21 runs to win, the home team had lost three wickets before this number was reached.
