(Received Jan. 18, at 5.5 p.m.) The new section of the contributory pensions scheme, whereby persons become eligible for the old age pension of 10s a week at the" age of 55 instead of 70, as hitherto, has now been in operation for a fortinght. The estimate of the Government actuary when legislations providing for the new pensions was being passed was that 466.000 persons of both sexes would he entitled to them. This figure will prove to be very accurate, for 460,000 claims have alreadv been admitted, and there remain 10,000 claims which present some difficulty, and have still to be decided.
