AMERICAN SHIPPING
A CONTRACT TERMINATED. DIRECTOR’S IMPROPER LOAN. (Prepp Association-- Bv Telegraph Copyright WASHINGTON, January 17. (Received Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.) The Shipping Commissioner presented to the United Shipping Board a resolution to terminate the provisional contract under which Swayne and Hoyte have been operating the Ameriea-Australia Orient Line. The Commissioner proposed that the line should be returned to the Emergency Fleet Corporation for operation until it is sold to private interests. —A. and N.Z. Cable. A previous message stated that Hie board had adopted a resolution cancelling the contracts between it and Swayne and Hoyte, managing agents of the AmericaAustralian Orient Line, which operates several vessels between Australia, New Z'aland, and the United States, on the ground that Mr W. S. Hill, one of the Shipping Board commissioners, cepted a loan qn a note from Swayne and Hoyte. The resolution .stated: “In the opinion of the board the offer and the acceptance of such a loan constitute a grave impropriety.’’ Mr Hill issued a statement in which he said he never dreamed that the loan would be improper, and was extremely surprised when he learned that the agents of the Department of Justice ■were investigating the matter.
